I don't think Armas was outcoached in this game and should be fired on this game alone, but this is a continuation of a wider trend of poor results, yes even based on the talent we already have. Even in this game, our talent was superior to depleted DC roster. And while we had a lot of possession, actual good chances created were minimal. In the first half it was Barlow one on one, after a give away, where he shot weak then rebounded into the post, another Barlow run off Royer's pass, but GK was right there, not much Barlow could do. In the second half Jorgey had a nice run but defender got back to block the shot in the nick of time. They also had similar chance as Jorgey, where Nealis saved a goal, and they did get one goal off a set piece.

So, yeah, it felt like we were a better team with more possession, but we just were not that dangerous. Do you remember under Marsch were were pretty good with set pieces? I don't recall now any dangerous chances we created off set pieces in a while. Maybe there were some, which I am forgetting, but generally we aren't very good at it any more. Yet this is how weaker teams sometimes get results against superior teams, by defending and getting some off set pieces. Heck, just last night was a perfect example of us being on the receiving end. Maybe guys like Davis, Pendant, etc could have been told to take more risks in the final third. Maybe Mines should have come on a bit earlier to try to break the bunker with one on one more often before game considerably slowed down. We saw what happened when Barlow tried to beat someone one on one in the corner, Mines actually seemingly developed decent one on one ability. Or Jorgey got a bit more time given Barlow tried hard but wasn't really effective.

Now is it just the players or the coach? Probably both. Eventually we need to get results. This was just one game, but the pattern continues. Sitting stars like Murillo, SIms, Kaku, blowing 2:0 and 3:1 leads in play-offs, exiting MLS tournament early, now losing against pathetic opponent at home, is overall just not an impressive body of work, while alienating aforementioned few star players we already have had.

Armas' failures are well documented, what I still can't get through my head is why every single media guy discussing the situation defends him

This actually gave me a laugh last night, in the second half we started to get a flurry of corners in a row, and literally just whoever was closest to the ball would take it. Ben Mines ended up taking one or two... I kept waiting for Armas to step in but it was clear there was no actual plan on these corners, just hoof it in and hope for the best.

Yea, even a "normal" corner involves timed runs and a well placed kick.  Both of which take practice.  I get taking a fast corner sometimes, but...

So we think this roster is reasonably capable of being a top-five team in the East but is being held back by coaching? I sure as fuck don't.

I agree. This team just doesnt have anybody who can score a goal right now. Cant break down the bunker, cant win the one v one battles. Our striker corps. is comprised of NCAA and USL level players at best. Even a great manager cant get these guys to create and finish. Maybe Tetteh will be a big improvement. He certainly must love his chance to get a lot of playing time. Armas should go at the end of the year, when Thelwell has had time to identify a stronger manager and we can bring them in when we arent in the midst of a pandemic. But I dont think Armas is holding back some secret juggernaut of a team.

Armas needs to bring this back to the basics. He needs to fix the transition between defence, midfield and forwards. And focus on set pieces. That is how they are foing to grind results right now.

The press has been great but the fitness is not there right now to excute it. I understand why he is mixing up the line ups. He needs fresh legs.

I dont blame armas, front office or the players for this fiasco. Covid has impacted their ability to get into game shape. As of right now, the team wont be running in full cylinders until late September. Until then we just have to hope we can survive.

All due respect, elf, but Armas hasnt really passes the smell test since he took over. COVID is messing with every team.

What kind of statement is that? He won the supporters shield.

Yes, covid is mess with everyone but its impacting rbny more since they rely on fitness more.

they had momentum when Jesse left that season, and to me it looked like every game (yes they got results that first Armas 1/2 season) was a fluke. The team still had the muscle memory from Jesses time there. Armas didnt try to change much that season. Beginning the next one, it all went to shit, no? And has been mediocre since.

Yes, they rely on fitness for the pressing game. But we dont even press that much anymore! Every team relies on fitness.

Close thread.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.
