any update on Omir Fernandez signing HG contract?

Per MLS soccer rated #1 HG prospect and likely to sign.

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

Also read Omir Rodríguez may get a Homegrown contract... I didn't even know he got called up to the U20s either... I hope the kid kills it for the U20 and can step in at RB2 to be groomed as BWP back up soon or maybe even heir apparent

Hearing the Red Bulls are working to finalize a Homegrown deal with Omir Fernandez, who came up through the club's academy. The Bronx native is a sophomore at Wake Forest and just got called up to the US U20 camp #RBNY

So today I heard Omir deal "finalized tomorrow" from a reputable source and then another that said the deal is off with Omir going back for his junior year at Wake Forest.

Hmmm...

I'm going to go with somewhere in the middle with done deal before they go to Arizona.

Anyone got the scouting report on him? If he's a U20 he's gotta have some game.

The club put him on the preseason roster they released today and didn't qualify him as an academy player, so.....signing confirmed?

he was a prolific scorer in one of the best soccer conferences in NCAA. whether that translates to the MLS level is one thing. at minimum, he could thrive in USL and prove himself, like White did.

Thought I had seen this kid so I went back through some old threads and it was 2 years ago in some preseason games. Remembered I was a big fan. He was really good in a game where nobody else was good up top. Curious to see whether he’s developed more physically because that will mean a lot towards handling opposing MLS players. He definitely had MLS ability though so I’m hoping he emerges.

Honestly from an accomplishments stand point probably our one of our best college signings we've made in a while (1st team all american, ACC offensive player of the year, #5 ranked player in country according to topdrawersoccer).  For context was significantly more dominant than Muyl and Etienne at the college level.

from my memory of watching him a little that preseason and other sporadic times (so anyone who has seen him more especially recently correct):

  • He is quick and a very active runner.  Working "hard" enough won't be an issue for him in our system.
  • I don't think his off the ball movement was as good as Mines at a comparable age, but its still solid/above average
  • Good and willing to take players on one v one.  He doesn't have silky technique when dribbling but is effective
  • Willing shooter (which we frankly need)

Pretty optimistic about his development.  Would be nice if we could develop one "very good" level attacking player from the academy.  RB2 will be fun next year if he plays on wing with Mines if one of them makes a big step

I think you will all be impressed.

Was a high level talent with the academy that earned a spot on the USL team a few years ago. He only saw some stoppage time in one match. Tough to judge against college players, so I wasn't sure until I watched him with our U23s last season. He's a stud. Hoping he does a bit better with his time than last years Wake Forest kids in Kevin Politz and Steven Echevarria.
