#1348007 2019 Gold Cup

Posted by Brian.MLS on Today, 09:52 AM

Marcus Holgersson was the most underrated Red Bull of all time and I'm willing to die on this hill. Petke's biggest mistake as a coach was replacing him with Armando just because Armando knew kung fu and was willing to use it.

Holgersson was awful in the beginning. After coming off his extended benching, he did become one of my favorite players.

Let's not fool ourselves. Our sporting director is not well versed enough to deal with many agents.
Tanase's agent is the same agent as Alex Ionita. Supposedly Red Bulls offered $1.7M for Ionita in Nov. 2017 that was turned down.

Anyone who prefers Mines over Etienne is crazy.

When Mines isn't injured, he's still not a starter on the USL team. The guy needs steroids for a year, take the however many game ban, and maybe he pans out. Until then he gets muscled off almost every ball at the USL level, nevermind MLS.

#1347495 USA lost 2 friendlies

Promising signs for Long's recovery, he's starting in the USMNT friendly today.

Tends to be a trend with our backline. Cant play for the team that signs your check, but no problems playing for National teams.

The top team in the conference amd the second highest goalscoring team in the league playing against a backline of Duncan-Parker-Nealis-Lade. There is someone to blame for this being our depth and it's not Armas.

Our defense is Duncan-Parker-Nealis-Lade.
I'm not pissed because when that's your backline against the top team in the conference, you are going to give up goals.

#1347351 2019 NYRBII USL Thread

Ref has struggled since kickoff. More in favor of NYRBII, but plenty of questionable calls on either side and ATL2 is melting down a bit now.

#1347206 Reyna quit in 2008

Ugh Arguably am even worst DP than Marquez.

Not even close. Rafa, Enormous Gap, Omer Damari, Frank Airplane Injury Rost, then Reyna.

The problem with that, besides being overly complicated, is that STH's would all sign up for the free ticket, selling out the place, and then 90% would be no shows.
What they should do is charge us the $10, then when the ticket actually gets used, put a $15 concessions credit on our red card.

This. 100% this.

All Shield Head Coaches in the same building = something in the air. Team was phenomenal!

I am fine with them hosting it at MSU, due to expected crowd and costs, along with potential to get some folks to come out to more II matches when they realize how easy MSU is to navigate.

They absolutely dropped the ball by not making it free to season ticket holders.

MdG is terrible when it comes to customer perspective and customer-facing decision making. The fanbase has dwindled and it's stupid choices with extremely limited positive monetary impact to Red Bull that cause complete disengagement. My guess is that they figure if only half the STHs show up than would have at RBA, they still cash in and due to the capacity at MSU, they dont want all STHs coming. They will likely have more STH cancel for next year than will pay $10 at MSU due to this.

#1346916 Meola Interview

Posted by Brian.MLS on 31 May 2019 - 06:14 AM

Crazy story.

Bora made them watch Rocky V then told him they wouldnt trade him. Meanwhile, Meola was still pissed about the Vermes trade from a season or two ago. Same day, he hears on the radio that he was traded to KC and was pissed and wanted to retire rather than go to KC, which he ended up loving and being very successful there. Stated his wife convinced him to move and that had he not been traded back to Metro, he would have likely stayed in KC.

Outside this interview: Vermes' trade was one of the original stories I heard when I worked for the club as a "cautionary tale" about doing well and performing. Vermes would do anything and everything Metro asked him to do, including working weekends and driving hours to do interviews, unpaid. When the team traded him, players were stunned and furious, many asked to be traded as well. They traded him for Kerry Zavagnin, who was just drafted and not a highly touted prospect. Kerry was awful here before turning his career around and being a USMNT regular while back in KC. There was a Jeff Bradley (original PR Director for Metro) interview that went into some of this, but cannot locate it.

9 USL1 teams. FC Tuscon is owned by Phoniex Rising and serves as their B team, so they are ineligible.
Edit: You also forgot Miami for MLS, so your total is still correct.
NISA just seems like a horrible idea. Most of their teams are based in markets with an MLS team already. I just don't see the point.

Good catches! Thank you.

NISA made sense when Peter Wilt was in charge. Their recent "announcement" was one of the worst few minutes that explained nothing on progress. It was so bad, that it leads me to believe nobody there has a sense of what is going on or how to communicate ideas. Their president(?) admitted in an interview the other day that they have been poor with communication, but more details will come after June 6th meetings. I'm fairly certain they will end up pairing with the NPSL Pro league in some way, shape, or form.

For 2020:
22 MLS clubs
+Nashville, -Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver

25 USL Championship clubs
+ Bay Area, -Ottawa and Nashville, 10 affiliates including Rio Grande Valley (not sure why Reno can play as they are a hybrid like Rio Grande but they did this year)

10 USL League 1 clubs
+ Penn FC, Rochester Rhinos and Omaha, -TFC2, Orlando City B, North Texas

11 NPSL Pro clubs
Fall start, may have more pro clubs in 2020. May also merge with NISA to gain D3 sanctioning.

8 NISA clubs
Announced their 8 club markets for fall. May end up merging with NPSL Pro to gain D3 sanctioning

That's 76 clubs before the non-pro clubs enter.
