Sure. Either approach happens and is perfectly fine.

I think the logic is wrapped up in the complexities of the league salary structure and touches on the free agency issue, as you mention - pay is tied to league tenure and a lot of the veteran players don't want to leave the current city, much less the country - so when their option doesnt fit under the cap, they have traditionally just passed through the re-entry draft as a token gesture before negotiating an embarrassing number, the player retires etc
I can see a scenario where the players don't actually like the re-entry draft, but that it was something they negotiated for as a compensating control over the leagues other bullshit pay mechanisms.
I don't get it. Player is on an option year. Team wants to move on. It finds a team the player wants to go and works out a deal beneficial to both teams. Everyone is happy. This is not a big deal and happens in every sport.
Heck, since MLS has a limit on 2 free agent signings per team, doing a this could actually HELP Miami sign another free agent.
Robles definitely wanted to be a free agent. It's just more leverage for him. Hamlett did the nice thing here but it wasn't the right thing to do. Assets are everything for a GM and you have to maximize it.
But judging off how some people reacted around here to other situations, Hamlett would have gotten blasted either way.
Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.
Given the team's developing reputation of being ice cold with crucial players past 30, doing right by a widely-respected player is not a bad move.
RED. BULL. OUT.

My hot take is the Red Bull FO failed to keep a loyal servant in the club. Luis is 100% the type of player to keep in your organization; many pundits in the league have recognized that. While he has some time left on the field, he may have more potential as a future coach, executive or ambassador of the club. Robles already made his money. Being the insightful and forward thinking man he is, he would have jumped at the chance to stay in the organization that took a chance on him when no one else would. I'm sure a new organization, like Team Beckham, looks at his off the field potential as something they need after his playing career concludes (maybe before too).
Robles is a class act. I doubt he'd ever throw the Red Bull FO under the bus for not following through on efforts to retain him. Perhaps Luis is keeping his mouth shut to avoid spoiling future prospects within our organization. I'm not certain why, but our FO did not do right by Robles this past month or two.

Or maybe he said I want to play another two years, and not as a backup or bench warmer...and I want to play somewhere warm like Miami, not in Columbus or Minnesota. I would think that BWP is also a player most could see staying within the organization, but he's just not ready to retire. I think if either player was ready to hang up the boots now they would've been offered opportunities within the organization. They are not however, and they don't fit Red Bull's first team plans, and so they're moving on.

too early to tell what went on. Usually takes 6-24 months to come out.
Luis would be first rate person to work in the team though
Also - not in plans could mean not in plans to play as first teamer and he wanted to do so.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.
"When I sit here in this position thats my ultimate goal: how do I construct a team that will bring the New York Red Bulls an MLS Cup," Red Bulls sporting director Denis Hamlett said on a conference call on Thursday afternoon. "That is the thing that is at the forefront of everything we think about and these are tough decisions you make and I think its part of it. Our main goal is how do we construct something that can help us win championships and I understand (fan frustration) but I cant make emotional decisions."
Yet clearly, you did.
We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.
