I don't understand how or why Chelsea would pay him more than he could get for himself on the open market.

They just have more money to spend than smaller teams? Sunk costs and refusing to accept their mistake? Not sure.

Also, would love to get the contract details, wouldn't be surprised if his salary is now lower, given his super-high-at-the-time potential has not exactly materialized.

No club will loan out a player without extending them.

he probably extended because Chelsea said they wouldnt loan him unless he signed an extension.  so if no one bough him in 2 weeks he would risk rotting on the Chelsea bench before a world cup year with spots up for grabs.  Can't risk that if you have any national team ambitions.

Chelsea is making money off the loan fees.

Alot of euro clubs do this as a way to make money. Not great for player development.
