Budget Charge for Season-ending Injuries

The club will remain responsible for the injured player's full Salary Budget Charge. Clubs may execute a trade to create budget space in order to sign a Season-ending Injury Replacement Player. This is the only circumstance in which a club may trade for Salary Budget space.

MLS clubs are only able to receive budget relief (paid out of the club's own pocket) for a season-ending injury under the following parameters:

  • The injured player must be earning at least $100,000 per annum.
  • The injured player must have suffered the season ending injury prior to the close the Primary Transfer Window and the new player must be signed as of such date.
  • The Season-ending Injury Replacement Player may earn up to $250,000 but not more than the player who suffered the season-ending injury.
  • The club is ultimately responsible for the payment of the replacement player's salary (which will not be charged to the club's budget).
  • MLS clubs will only be allowed to sign one such Season-ending Injury Replacement Player a year.

So I read it as the injured players salary still hits the cap, but the replacement players doesn't as long as it's under $250k. Also, pretty sure Gulbrandsen is the replacement. The replacement doesn't have to be a direct positional replacement. I also don't think Baah's injury is really season ending. Probably could have been back by the summer. Pretty confident that they put him on there for more roster moves instead of waiting a few more months on Baah.

That's true.  Although I'm thinking Gulbrandsen is gonna get more money than 250k just for the reason that forwards with any goal scoring in their history get more than other positions.

True, but I think up to $250k basically gets waived, or however it should be termed (fucking MLS rules). Then anything outside of that is fair game.

I think they were getting Gulbrandsen independent of Baah's status, and we are getting another CB.    How they play with the funny money almost doesn't mater, because they have so much on the table to play with.

They probably were. I had no idea about BWP getting his green card until I caught it on the MLS roster list the other day. I originally thought they were delaying the Gulbrandsen move until the Baah situation was done to free up his international spot. Clearly I was wrong lol. BUT, I am curious to see how this plays out with the direct replacement, if it is in fact not Gulbrandsen. They only have until the end of this transfer window (May) to find a direct replacement otherwise they're beat. So either Gulbrandsen is that replacement, or we'll be getting someone else pretty soon. Can't imagine them waiting until May to pull the trigger and they're too budget conscious to let Baah's salary cap hit go to waste.

Absolutely gonna sign a CB.  No chance we hold off on that.  Just a question of who.  We need 4 and it doesn't seem like they trust Ndam yet.
