#1444715 Is Vanzeir a bust?

Posted by ivo on 27 March 2024 - 11:50 AM

Elf and ivo - the guys just had his best game ever for metro... just be happy. The team won 4-0 and he assisted on every goal.

I have very recently really doubted Vanziers pace and stamina, but he looked great out there on Saturday. That is him "turning it around".

Poking holes in his performance is really negative. The guy had an amazing game. He could have added a goal to his 4 assists, sure. But a Vanzier that is playing like he did on Saturday is a DP. Add those two goals, and consistently over the season, and you are talking MLS MVP over Messi. Thats not a reasonable requirement for me.

I'm happy with the win and agree that Vanzeir's overall performance was very good. I have given credit about the things he did well in this game - movement, assists, decision-making - in every single post I made about the game, and yes, that was an amazing game in terms of the scoreline, team performance and even Vanzeir's performance. Pointing out that he missed the target on his two shots is not negative, just reality.

I will hold off judgement on whether he's fully "turned it around" until it happens on a consistent basis and not claim 'mission accomplished' after a one-off 4-assist performance that will likely not be repeated ever again. He can easily shut naysayers up by scoring a few goals, or maybe putting the ball on target to start.

The player has to put the ball in the net, but they're not going to very often if they aren't on the receiving end of good chances (or if they don't know how to generate those chances themselves).

Vanzeir, for example, didn't just forget how to shoot once he got here.  His shots on target percentage was about half what it was in Belgium...and so was his xG/shot.

If the team generates better chances, all of a sudden, Vanzeir's going to look like a better shooter.

Great assists and movement vs Miami, but can't put the ball on target to save his life at the moment.

Morgan was talking to Vanzeir often during the game. "Just pass it to me, bruv"

I do not understand the knocks on Vanzeir today. The ball he played to Manoel was fantastic and not the type of thing any forward we have had in years could do.

Did you see the situation in the 47th minute?

Comparing favorably to Barlow and players who couldn't outplay Barlow is hardly a compliment.

I realize Vanzier is here to stay and will play a lot of minutes this season if healthy. He may still come through, perform well, and score a bunch of goals. I just think it's unlikely to happen based on some individual plays from last season and this one. I sure hope I'm wrong.

Sean Nealis to LB maybe he's had a cultured left foot all along and we just never believed in him enough to use it

😄😄

Remember the game where Amro Tarek played as LB? He had one cross that was better than anything even John Tolkin's ever done. Never to be repeated again.

Ive seen this a lot but not sure why people are penciling Harper as a starting right back. Hes 3rd there for me. Also Dylan was good against Nashville are no reason not to start him again

Defense wasn't exactly tested much by Nashville, a wingback couldn't be bad defensively in that game if he tried. And Dylan didn't create much going forward - Harper would be a much bigger threat.

I've reluctantly accepted DNealis on the roster as CB4 and WB3 on both wings, but I draw the line at him being promoted in the pecking order based on one match against toothless opposition. :)

#1443313 Dennis Gjengaar signed

Good points all around. On Gjengaar, I am a bit more down than Eile. While admittedly only watching highlights, Eile managed to start for a team in Sweden, which it top 4 in fewest goal allowed. That at least gave some hope. Gjengaar had two goals and two assists last year in 29 games as attacking midfielder in weaker Norway League for a bottom half team. At best he is probably depth or just complete work in progress. I certainly want to see him asap to evaluate, but I doubt the cavalry is on the way.

That's 2023 Luquinhas-level numbers

Red card or not on Davis?

I say clear Red
Dont know what the heck the commentator was talking about eye on the ball soccer move what?

Also Duncan was solid

[Yellow card] Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned

[Red Card] Using excessive force is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off

For me it was reckless, so yellow was fine.

#1442527 Do we have a forward?

Have you seen Przyzblko the last two years?

I haven't much but 50 games/2,500 minutes/9 goals/3 assists tells me all I need to know. That's just surface box score, sure, but when it's only marginally better than Barlow (70/3,100/9/2), I have seen enough. Pass.

Based on yesterdays match Dante & Manoel are still going to miss too many of them, but they should score more than last season.

"more than last season" is a very low bar and should be a given. They had 8 goals combined (Manoel 6, Vanzeir 2).

Love how we've signed 1 proper DP in 10 years and people are "okay, maybe I'll take a superstar world class forward." LOL come on. These guys aren't coming here.

Thing is we werent actually that bad last year. Lessene was at a 1.5 points per game but Struber had dug a big hole. 1.5 for an entire season is 51 points and that was done starting ndam at times and with a ton of injuries in the attack. Forsberg Morgan back vanzeir with a full preseason Edelman a year older more established eile has to be an upgrade over ndam Tolkin back. We can be in the conversation for 1.7ish ppg and thats pushing you into to that top 3-4 conversation

Add a DP9 and we're in contention for another Shield

Feels definitely underutilized

Based on the success rate... overutilized? 🤔

Think of it from the coach POV. You're coming to a new country to coach a team you're not familiar with. The team underperformed by all counts last season, but the last thing you want is to blow up the entire team in the span of a few weeks.

So what do you do? Work with the front office to identify a few areas you need key signings. Bring in a star midfielder. Bring in a key depth piece in the back. Offload some deadweight.  Now you have the off-season to see which guys can hack it and which ones can't.

Count me in the "wait and see" camp. We've improved our squad already - let's see what the coach can cook up before we brand this off-season a failure.

Totally makes sense - until you get to the forward line, which was a nightmare last season,  and you've lost 2 of the 5 guys on it , with a third still not fit to pay (not that any of the three were any good in 2023). Do you think a coach is saying,  "no, I don't need a DP9, let me cook with Vanzeir and Manoel to see what we have here"?
Come on.

Technically, Vanzier should be raking up Barlows starting minutes.

I hope he steps up to fill Big Tom Barlow's big boots.
