Marat Safin won his first round match in straight sets. Next up for him is #3 Novak Djokovic. Can Safin return to his previous glory?
#30 Gaël Monfils withdrew due to a shoulder injury. The Frenchmen was a semifinalist at the French Open, losing to Federer.
#32 Michaël Llodra retired in his first round match due to injury as well. The Frenchmen was going to lose to Mario Ančić.

Andy Roddick, James Blake, Wayne Odesnik, Jesse Levine, 18-year old Donald Young, Mardy Fish and John Isner have yet to play their first round matches. Levine and Young are facing each other.

Pregame pints 15. Ticket to the game 60. Carlsburg, Meatpie and Crisps 16. Seeing an American score on another American at a Premier League match in England; Priceless.

DiercTV has a Wimbledon channel that shows all 8 games being played simultaneously. I don't typically watch tennis but this is pretty awesome.
That sounds pretty awesome. 1 screen, 8 matches. Wow.

Wimbledon came under fire from animal activists on Tuesday for using marksmen to shoot down dive-bombing pigeons.
The tournament employs two hawks to scare away pigeons who had become a pest swooping down on Centre Court and distracting players in the middle of tense matches.
But the hawks failed to keep the pigeons away from the players’ lawn and the open-air media restaurant so marksmen were called in.
“The hawks are our first line of deterrent, and by and large they do the job,” Wimbledon spokesman Johnny Perkins said.
“But unfortunately there were one or two areas where the hawks didn’t deter the pigeons, so it was deemed necessary to take a harder approach,” he explained.
The marksmen were summoned by Wimbledon as pigeon droppings on the restaurant tables were thought to be a health hazard.
The decision to call in the marksmen was condemned as “cruel and illegal behaviour” by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) which complained to the tournament organisers and the police.
“Since the use of marksmen to kill pigeons appears to have been carried out as a first, rather than a last resort, and not out of a concern for public health, but rather because the animals were deemed inconvenient by players, you appear to be in clear violation of the law,” PETA vice-president Bruce Friedrich said.

In the Men's bracket the only American to make it to the Third Round was Bobby Reynolds. Sad. He is on his way to losing to Feliciano López.
Marat Safin defeated #3 Djokovic in straight sets in the second round. He will face #29 Andreas Seppi in the third round.
The only Brit remaining, Andy Murray, will face Tommy Haas in the third round.

Wake me up in two months for the US Open. Until then, I'm snoozing on tennis.

#13 Stanislas Wawrinka takes on former World #1 Marat Safin. Safin has only made it to the quarterfinals once, in 2002. He has not made it past the 4th round of a grand slam since he won the Australian Open in 2005. Safin upset #3 Novak Djokovic in the second round. Safin ended Djokovic's streak of 5 straight semifinal appearances in grand slams. In that span he reached the final of the 2007 U.S. Open and won the Australian Open this year. Safin beat him in straight sets. This is only the second time that Wawrinka has made it past the 1st round at Wimbledon.
#10 Marcos Baghdatis takes on Feliciano López. Baghdatis was a quarterfinalist last year and a semifinalist the year before.
Section 5 of the bracket should be seeing a Roddick-Blake 4th Round match but both of them were eliminated in the second round. Instead we will see a battle between the two players who defeated them. Janko Tipsarević who beat Roddick will take on Rainer Schüttler who beat Blake. Both players are unseeded and have never made it to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Schüttler lost to Andre Agassi in the 2003 Australian Open final. Schüttler is a 32-year old from Germany while Tipsarević is a 24-year old Serb.
Another match between unseeded opponenets sees Marin Čilić take on Arnaud Clément. The 19-year old Croat is playing in his second Wimbledon and was eliminated in the 1st round last year. Čilić has already defeated 2 Frenchmen including #14 Paul-Henri Mathieu in the 3rd round. Before that in the 2nd round he defeated #24 Jarkko Nieminen. He will try to defeat a third Frenchmen when he takes on 30-year old Clément. In the first round Clément defeated veteran Jonas Björkman in 4 sets after losing the 1st set. He played two opponents who were nothing special after that.
#8 Richard Gasquet takes on hometown favorite #12 Andy Murray. Gasquet reached the semifinals last year. Murray has never reached the quarterfinal of a grand slam.
#2 Rafael Nadal will face #17 Mikhail Youzhny. Nadal lost to Federer in the final in 2006 and 2007. Youzhny has never made it to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, losing in the fourth round 5 times, including last year.

In the quarterfinals #1 Roger Federer defeated Mario Ancic in straight sets. #2 Rafael Nadal defeated #12 Andy Murray in straight sets as well. Marat Safin lost the first set to #31 Feliciano Lopez but then won the next three. Safin will face Federer in the semifinals. Nadal will face the winner of Rainer Schuettler and Arnaud Clement. Their match was rained out today. They have each won a set and will continue in the morning.
The women semifinals will be played in the morning as well. #6 Serena Williams faces Wild Card Jie Zheng who is the surprise of the tournament. #5 Elena Dementieva will face #7 Venus Williams. Venus won the tournament last year. Serena is 5-1 against her sister in Grand Slam finals.
Serena defeated her sister in the 2002 French Open, 2002 Wimbledon, 2002 U.S. Open, 2003 Australian Open, 2003 Wimbledon. Venus defeated Serna in the 2001 U.S. Open final.
Serena and Venus are in the semifinals together in the Women's Doubles tournament. They will face Nathalie Dechy and Casey Dellacqua. The Bryan brothers are in the semifinals in the Men's Doubles tournament and will face Jonas Bjorkman and Kevin Ullyett.
