It's not a Westy though...Here's one for $1,500. With another 1k of repairs to make her road worthy and $1,500 for shipping, between 6 guys, that's $750 a piece.
Bonus: It's pea green!

You can only sleep 4 people in a Westy, and you'd better be really (really) good friends. It's not a Westy though...
I talked with these guys after the Chivas game in Lot X. They're planning on a group of 6, and taking tents to sleep in and then leaving the bus in SA.
It makes sense really - SA has very little infrastructure, so you're best bet for accommodations is to camp. Public transportation is probably going to be a nightmare, so you're best off having your own vehicle.

Why not buy the van there?
There's a '97 Vanagon on the page for R47000, which at the exchage rate of 0.130888 rands is about $6200. It's gotta cost something significant to ship a car across the ocean, no? At least $500?

Buying one in SA is a good idea, but personally, I wouldn't want to spend my limited vacation time going used car shopping. You'd be in a hurry, and probably wind up paying too much.
If you buy one here in SoCal, you can drive it for a while, and make sure that its in good mechanical condition for when you get there.
Although breaking down in a VW bus in Africa would be a good story to tell!

That South African used car site has a ton of Ford Galaxies from the late 60's. Just sayin'.It was $1500 to ship to the Green Goblin from Long Beach to Amsterdam.

A water cooled V8 Ford Galaxie would most certainly be a hell of a lot faster than an air cooled 4 banger VW bus. That South African used car site has a ton of Ford Galaxies from the late 60's. Just sayin'.
Rust free California VW vans are a commodity though, and they should be able to find a buyer in SA before it ever leaves CA.

Id be more worried about trying to find your car after it has been shipped to SA. Seems like one of those things you have to time just right. Ship it too soon and it will end up getting lost. Ship it too late and it wont get there and through whatever kind of customs they have in time.
I am interested in this though so whatever is found out about shipping it please let us all know.

Look what I found:all this talk about the vw bus is making me want to get one again. i remember posting a pic of something i would like but that would be really expensive. i want a vw bus that has safari windows. if i were to get one i would name it the green goblin II in honor of DD's original bus.
I'm way WAAAY more hippy than anyone else in LARS
