Can an RB Salzburg strategy work in MLS long term though and would it help the club's profile in New York? Honestly, I doubt the answer to both questions is positive.

Good article on the RB philosophy... even Salzburg is a selling club. https://soccer.nbcsp...mino-transfers/

The thing I don't understand is....what is preventing us from buying an Almiron, or Josef Martinez type player, have them play here for a few years, and then we sell them to a European team for a profit. Or even sell them to Leipzig or Salzburg like Tyler Adams. Isn't that Red Bull philosophy? Develop young talent, sell, and make money?

That is what we should be doing, maybe not to the extent of paying the transfer fees Atlanta did and does...but outside of developing Tyler and buying Kaku two winters ago the well has dried up.

Jørgensen could potentially net RBNY a profit, but he is a project at this point and it could go either way.

Think there is a gap right now with the IIs and the academy where there isnt another Tyler like talent ready to step into the first team and get showcased for a future sale.

Best bet right now is probably Tolkin and maybe Sowe down the line.

Has to be corrected with a larger number of outside purchases of young talent for the time being. Mitchell and Fernies time to shine.

Lack of confidence in our management to make a good investment.     Kaku and Matty Ice (and Keita and...) haven't reflected well on their judgement.    They've acknowledged that by bringing in new scouts - we'll see if that helps matters, and how much rope they will give Hamsandwich before he hangs himself.

I agree about Jorgensen but think Kaku was a fine pick up. Would be more than happy if we snagged a couple of players of his caliber before the pre-season starts.

"Selling club" seems to have a negative connotation among many fans. Weird when there are maybe 10 clubs in the world that wouldn't be a selling club when a bigger fish comes in with a bid.

If you're not a selling club (and are not Real/Barca/Bayern/City/etc), it just means no one wants to buy your players, hardly a great achievement/compliment.

buying an almiron, josef martinez or even a kaku is a big risk.

Just look at Kaku. He took a bad knock in the playoffs. Is he worth more than what rbny paid for? Today, no. Will rbny make a profit? Who knows. A lot will depend on how he recovers and his form.

Its a safer investment to develop the next adams or miazga.

If a reporter is watching this board... i wonder what Red Bulls philosophy is on DP spending. Is this budget dependent on how much $$ rbny makes from transfers (i think this is it) or is the budget vast but it requires the right fit/rb HQ approval.

He was not a fine pick if you judge it based on profitability.  I doubt we ever can sell him for a profit, and while he's been fine, he hasn't been six million dollar man fine.     We could have probably gotten a more proven guy a few years older for that money, but we wanted a youngster we could develop and sell.    That may still happen, but until it gets more likely, the mothership will be hesitant to throw more money at us.

Loan us Haaland for the 2020 season...can you imagine what he would do in MLS? Then sell him!

Agree with the concept but not sure the system we use will get Kaku to be worth more money in a sell.  I don't think it shows his best talents.

His dream is to win the PL with Leeds,
so loan him to us until they are promoted!

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Yeah but can this be emulated in MLS? RB Salzburg managed to find Haaland from Norway, during a season he scored over 10 goals as an 18-year old. Would RB make that kind of move for New York? We sort of did the "broke" version of that with Jorgi. Minamino meanwhile was a regular starter for a J1 League side in Japan before being signed by RB Salzburg. Also MLS will be, if not already, better than the Austrian Bundesliga. RB Salzburg is the undisputed best side in Austria and can sign the better talents. That isn't exactly the easiest thing to do in MLS.

Perhaps the best strategy for RBNY would be to have someone working in the RBS scouting room.

Somehow I think playing in Champions League matches would do slightly more to increase his value

Because for ever Almiron or Josef Martinez, there is an Escobar or Pity Martinez who you are likely to lose money on.  It is not like buying South American talent and selling them on to Europe is a sure thing that many people make it out to be. For instance, we will be lucky to make a profit on Kaku and took a big loss on Veron.

If buying and developing talent was easy, every club in the world aside from the very biggest would be making tons of money doing it.  For every prospect, there a tons of other clubs interested, all of whom are pushing up the price and lots of players end up selling for way more than they are ever worth, especially young unproven ones.
