I realize that MLS roster restrictions make it difficult but I think its a hard stance to wholeheartedly defend the level of investment compared to the rest of MLS, let alone the rest of the Red Bull universe.

Thats being forgiving on the Jensen, Pendant, and Yearwood signings, because theyve shown a certain level of competence or have some pedigree/potential/required a decent fee.

The Jørgensen miss, the Kaku regression under Armas, and having 1 legitimate DP on the roster (not denying Yearwoods talent potential but most other MLS teams would buy him down or re-classify him to make room for a more marquee signing) loom large.

I wonder how loud wed be banging this drum if we had a competent manager, but I think even if RBNY aren't one of the highest spenders in MLS the level is going to need to increase as the rest of the league spends more and more $$

Who is the one legitimate DP?

We were the biggest spenders in MLS the first 8 years of Red Bull ownership.

Oh, how times changed.

the RB strategy is going for several lower transfer fee guys didnt really work with the previous MLS rules.  Hoping that between new U22 rule next year, more TAM/GAM and a component "Head of Sport" we will see spend increase.

Expectations are low though and disappointment is expected lol

we used to spend a lot and it got us...1 shield?  While still playing regularly in front of 50-70% full stadiums.  no MLS Cup. No Champions League Cup.

Then we spent considerably less and it got us 2 shields. While still playing regularly in front of 50-70% full stadiums. no MLS Cup. No Champions League Cup.

It's a hard sell to your bosses in Austria to say "hey man, can we pretty please start buying these awesome players that people on the Metrofanatic board keep posting about??"

Also don't forget in Brazil they have pro/rel. So they can't fill their roster with NCAA scrubs because teams like Santos, Cruzeiro, Sao Paolo etc. would destroy them, and they would get relegated their very first year. So of course they have to load up their roster, because there's a direct $$$ link to staying in the first division.  In MLS, we loaded up with scrubs and had our first truly bad year in a long time. And guess what, it didn't cost them much $$$ (since we can't get relegated to USL).  And with covid-19, the stadium was going to be empty this year either way, so they lucked out on that front.

Bottom line - get used to the new normal around here. If you want to root for a team that spends $$$, the blue team is across the river (oh wait, actually they play here now)

if they spend a lot.. I need to see NY sign some big name DPs... A lot of guys out there can be sign with Transfer fees that they spent on Kaku that can easily be considered MLS all-star caliber... Some big names are even available without any transfer fee whatsoever....

We need 3 big signings... These young kids are a nice touch and at least make me feel like they are actually still trying to do their job but I don't want to feel like oh well at least they tried, I want to feel like NY have a chance at winning it all...
I just want Metro to win a title sometime in my lifetime.

Why should it be? RB sells a brand name.
They spend hundreds of millions pushing it.
RB is all about marketing.
A lagging NY franchise does not help that.
They might spend $200 Million annually on F1.
$20-30M on an NY team is small change.

in Brazil they have pro/rel.

RB bought its way into the top Brazilian League.
The Leipzig work-our-way-up plan did not work.
So, they completely changed the plan. https://en.m.wikiped...sileiro_Série_A
There are only 8 or 9 top clubs in Brazil Serie A.
RBB can be a regular participant.

Bottom line - get used to the new normal around here.

I am OK with whatever plan works.
I am willing to wait for Thelwell to act.
But, how long will he be here without success??

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

I'm happy with the Yearwood and Tetteh signings, hopefully Yearwood is better than either Davis or CCJ and Tetteh steps right into the striker position and starts scoring.

I'm not too concerned about the defense, I think that Long, Parker and Tarek will get it together and raise their level from what we've seen this year.  I like Duncan and Pendant, leave them there and let them develop.

Now, I'd like to see them spend some cash on either one big time attacking midfielder or two above average players, players who will step right in and start.  They can speak to Milo for names, but this team could use at least one player who is better than Kaku, someone who will be a leader and one of the best players on the team.  Maybe not Henry-level, but the equivalent of Amado Guevara.

I was watching the 2007 RBNY v. LA Galaxy game this morning, it was great to see Mathis, a young Jozy, and Juan Pablo Angel all on the field together.  Two solid USMNT players and a legendary Colombian from the Premier League.  It's been a few years since we've had that kind of talent.

Red Bull went 12-11-7 in 2007, good for 3rd in the East.

Until the Marsch years, we never really had smart roster building. A lot of high end talent, but the squad always had gaping holes. We maybe didnt have the Henrys or JPAs during his tenure, we also didnt have any real weak points.

You're right, maybe I'm looking back through rose colored glasses.  But can you say that currently there is smart roster building, or that there aren't gaping holes?  Thelwell's only been here a few months (or weeks, who knows when  he really got here), so maybe things will change for the better.  Certainly, the signings of Yearwood and Tetteh and the trade of Muyl for an int'l spot bode well.

We are full of holes right now, I was only referencing the Marsch years, in which, even though we may have lacked impact players, the roster didnt really have any holes. And if they did, Marsch shore them up with a formation change.
