Seems like this is a big loss, although any loss is a big loss to a league with 11 teams in it.  And apparently Ft. Lauderdale and Rayo OKC are on shaky ground.

They are adding SF and the commissioner (Peterson, I think) is always talking about how much interest there is with expansion groups.  If that is legit, and there really are rich investors interested in the NASL, the league will overcome this.  Peter Wilt is working with a group in Chicago, if that gets off the ground it would be a big positive for the NASL.  The league could use more teams out west; San Diego seems like it would be a prime market for an NASL team.

The NASL may have entertained thoughts of one day forcing a merger with MLS; at this point the league may have to swallow its pride and merge with the USL.  That would create a much stronger second division and I think it would be a great thing for professional soccer in general in this country.  But then the NASL would have to get in bed with MLS.

Ottawa too.

MLS/USL really squeezed them out.

When you are extended an offer...just take it. The alternative is much worse.

the commissioner (Peterson, I think) is always talking

That seems to be the problem.

If you scan YouTube looking for Bradley Wright-Phillips, youll find numerous goal compilations, a few interviews and, eventually, an excerpt from the grime mixtape series Lord of the Mics.

Interesting read here about the new commish and how his vision may have wrecked the NASL. The old commish was better, but I've never been a fan of the league.

The best solution is for both the NASL and USL to grit their teeth, get together, bury the hatchet and establish some kind of two-tiered pro/rel system.

A lot of their owners and fans are clamoring for the system, and as the closed system calcifies around American soccer there likely won't be another opportunity for them to prove pro/rel can work without financially destroying teams.

There might not ever be pro/rel with MLS, but you're shutting the door completely if you don't at least try and prove it can work.

Would the USL be able to do pro/rel with all those MLS2 teams there?

AFAIK, in other countries, reserve teams cannot be promoted.

In some systems, teams also have to meet certain guidelines to be promoted.

Winning the lower league is not enough.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

I would love for the NASL to collapse and the Fake Cosmos to go out of existence just to spite all the Benedict Arnolds who jumped ship because our team became good.

No one left "because the team became good".

Many left because the team played poorly over the years.

Some left because of the atmosphere at GS.

Some left because RB bought the team.

Some defected because they thought the Cosmos were going to play in NYC.

Some defected because NYCFC actually play in NYC.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

I'd love to see the fake Cosmos fold just for the lulz

I'd like to think that more have been attracted by the atmosphere at RBA.

Reserve teams can be promoted, just not to the same level as their parent team.
