He was making ~$300k in '19, iirc. So salary dump if they do actually offload him.

Nothing personal cause he seems like a good guy, but good. Waaay too much cap space for a guy who imo doesn't crack 3rd on the depth chart for any of our midfield positions.

Damn, didn't realize he made that much. Would it be possible to renegotiate his contract? There was hope he'd become a $300K midfielder, but he hasn't shown the nose for goals that we saw vs. Chelsea. He brings good stuff to the team, but not at that price.

given we are a team that is generally on the younger side i dont think we need to worry too much about senior non-DP player salaries as long as there is still term left on their contracts.  We sign a ton of homegrown contracts and young guys who tend to have lower salaries than less established guys.  So Davis making $300k is immaterial to me if he is useful to the team (which he still is).

Now if Davis' contract expires after this season and he wants a raise, thats a whole other story.  He signed his extension in 2018 so there is a chance this is the case

Yes, it's known as "the Captain Curse."

Could be the Tim Parker ordeal all over again. Club knows they won't resign a fairly expensive player and wants to get whatever they can while they still can.

Davis option was exercised this winter, so yes its the last year of his current deal. If the rumor has any merit it doesnt look like they are planning on giving him a new one

Valot on Seeing Red this week, so he will be traded in about a month.

Well hes also in the last year of his contract, but if I had to choose based on ability and versatility Im taking Valot every time. Would not be upset if they kept him around a few more seasons.

According to advanced stats on FBref, Davis is elite in MLS in progressive passes and interceptions.

He is low in pass completion... but not as bad as Valot.

Who, to be fair, comes out excellently in many areas.

The midfield is pretty crowded.  Diarra, Yearwood and CCJ all can do roughly what Davis does (yeah, I'm kind of guessing about Diarra since I've never seen him play).  Also, Clark and maybe Valot can play centrally like Davis, although a little more forward from where Davis usually sits.

Who knows, maybe the Davis on the trading block and the Amaya tampering stories are connected.

Would be sad to see Sean go. He's kind of a regressed in a weird way after his first three seasons to become a middling midfielder. Just not quick enough to cover a lot of ground and, to the eye, not killer enough with a long pass.

He's very good at maintaining possession and transitioning out of the defending phase, but I feel like that's a limited toolset.

I like Sean a lot, I think with the right tactics he can shine. Just seems like as of late, he hasn't been the asset I thought he'd become in back in 2016.
