#1365295 MLS, Red Bulls and Coronavirus

Posted by Komba on 21 May 2020 - 01:05 PM

I also like Cuomo and in the press conferences but the nursing home thing is massive.  Most of the deaths of this damn virus is in Nursing homes so protecting them is everything.  A vast, vast majority of people manage with this just fine.

As far as I see, some states didn't have Covid patients being admitted to nursing homes so it's clearly a state by state decision.  If that's the case, then the governors that did the wrong deserve every bit of shit coming their way and the governors who did the right thing deserve to be recognized.

Still thinking a July start.  June for practice.  The actual numbers are going to come in way behind the early projections and that's a good thing.  For whatever reason, numbers not exploding in any way in Cali and other places and the numbers are so low it's not because of distancing.

Biggest thing is having treatments for this until a vaccine is approved.

Gotta get the economy going again though.  A serious depression will end up with deaths far beyond this virus.

Agree on that, time will prove whether shutting the country down was the right move.  Seeing the death rate remain so low makes a person wonder if the shutdown should have been more focused on the elderly and people with underlying health conditions. That said, Cuomo hasn't engaged in the typical blame game political crap and he's focused on actual things that have to get done. He's also done it in a composed manner that goes a long way to inspire confidence.  I don't agree with Cuomo on everything but that's how I've seen him.

I want this. I want to see how bad he really is.

He's not that bad.  He's really frustrating though.  He does a great job with his athleticism and speed to get in good positions, he just blows it on the final touch consistently.  Just hoping it's youth and not a trait of his.

Yeah, supposedly they were using Omir up there in preseason.  I'm on board with that but I guess it depends on opponent.  If the ball is going to be on the floor more, then Omir makes a ton of sense.  But if we're stuck hitting it long, then White is the best option.

Great first half.  Good to see Valot playing like himself.  Dude was turning into such a good player before the injuries.  And ACLs arent the worst injuries as long as there is no other ligament or meniscus damage in there.

Second half was awful.  Casseres was good in the first half but he was beyond awful in the 2nd.

Seagrist pretty good.

Duncan player of the game. Murillo was addition by subtraction with how bad he was last year.

Kaku looks really good right now too.  The injury shouldn't be a big deal.

6m Hearing, per source, that #RBNY is closing in on a contract extension with Cristian Cásseres, Jr.. Hard-working midfielder had 23 appearances (21 starts) in #MLS play & was a regular for the club. Seems like the organization sees him as part of the club's core.

I really don't know how Jorg blew the one chance.  Now getting these chances aren't easy.  He has elite speed and makes good choices.  Just doesn't seem to have the right mentality right now because he has to figure it out.

Seagrist was really good.

And overall I thought we looked really good.

Couldn't tell who gave up the goal, was it Davis?  He basically took a really easy ball to handle and gave it right to the other team.

Yeah, whoever the 3rd number 6 is will play a ton of minutes.  Happens every year.

What I do want to see is Armas show the willingness to play CCJ over Rza and Davis.  Because that's what should happen.

#1361019 Hamlett gets a new boss: Kevin Thelwell, Head of Sport

Posted by Komba on 07 February 2020 - 11:38 AM

Never know his motivation, it's impossible to get in someone's head.

Could love NYC.  It's one of the best cities in the world without a doubt.   Could be a situation where he's looking at the upside of moving up within Red Bull.  He does a good job here, there's a long way to go up.

Doesn't really matter.  We just need him to do a good job here.

#1361018 The Fire Chris Armas Thread

Posted by Komba on 07 February 2020 - 11:34 AM

To be fair, I think he's pretty good at this too.  My issues with Armas are: (1) I don't think he's a good motivator of players (at least relative to Jesse); and (2) he does not clearly impart his game plan to the team (or even worse, that he does not have a coherent plan).

This... entirely this.  He clearly couldn't motivate guys.  Every player on the field last year had a worse season outside of Royer.  The only judgement of a coach is how well do they get the team playing considering the talent level.  Even results isn't the final judgement because if the talent sucks, no great coach is saving that.  It's all about whether they get the most out of their players.  He proved he couldn't last year.

After we start slow (because we will) hopefully he'll get fired.

#1360491 Kemar sold

Posted by Komba on 31 January 2020 - 11:57 AM

If Kemar just really wanted to go to Europe (like Tyler Adams), that would be one thing. That's beyond our control

But it was more than that.

1) Kemar was unhappy with his pay. Which was totally understandable. He was probably the best bargain in the entire league with the amount we were paying him. Yes, he signed that contract, but there is NO reason we couldn't have given him a raise.

2) He specifically stated that he wanted out of Red Bull because of the way we've treated out veterans/legends (Dax, Sacha, Robles, BWP) and that he did not like he direction this team was going.

He's a MLS Best XI player. And by all accounts, his absence was the main reason why we did not make MLS Cup in 2018. To only get $1.5M for him is an absolute joke. I am so disgusted with this move.

Some things I disagree with here.

1. He very clearly wanted to go abroad.  He was posting pictures a couple years back of Turkey saying how much he wanted it to happen.

2. I don't have as much sympathy with his contract because the guy got a new contract almost every year he was here.  At some point you have to honor the deal you agreed to.  Yes, as a year goes by, other guys get paid more.  Welcome to sports and the market.  The highest paid players in every sport are always the good players who've signed recent deals.

3. I think the negative comments vs Red Bull were truth, but also just a way of forcing his way out.

Now, if it was my team, I'd be annoyed at him constantly asking for money, but I would have also re-signed him because i'm a huge fan of his.

And lastly, I really don't care what he was sold for because it means nothing beyond the max allocation amount.  And he got the max allocation.

People can rightfully whine about the price but it's not like it was going to be reinvested into the team, even if they sold him for 10 million. Sigh, just as I was starting to look forward to this season however slight my optimism was. At least our Jersey this year is nice and tickets will be dirt cheap.

Yeah, exactly.  The last reports have it at 1.5 mill so it's pretty clear that they were just doing what he wanted and letting him go.   I could care less about the amount because as long as we get the max allocation, that's all that matters.

Very new interview with Hamlett

“I think this is a big benefit of having that as a resource for us and we’re taking full advantage of it and bringing in the right players,” Hamlett told Pro Soccer USA during an exclusive interview. “We’re excited with this, and I think it’s only going to get better. We’re looking to continue to build off that and bring more players in.

Hamlett was quick to point out Major League Soccer’s primary transfer window hasn’t actually opened yet — it will Feb. 12 — and the Red Bulls will actively try to improve their roster.

“We feel that we’re in a good position, both in terms of our scouting network and the players that we want to bring in have been identified,” he said. “More important, we have the budget space that we could bring players in because we’re in a good position with our salary cap.”

Hamlett said ideally the club would have “22 starters” and competition at every position. That’s what he feels the Red Bulls accomplished by signing Jensen, a 27-year-old who has appeared in more than 200 professional games in Europe and was a three-year starter at FC Utrecht in the Dutch Eredivisie.

I like it.  The two should be the black and the red.
