RBNY tried to get Stephen Ireland (who is 26 years old), but the league blocked it. We have to pay even bigger bucks for someone in the prime of their career and almost always a huge transfer fee. MLS just doesn't allow for moves like that at this time.

The league blocked it ? Really?

Lets face it. 20 something stars just arent going to come to mls yet.

Explain this to me. I am under the belief that DP's are negotiated and paid by the club.

Any details you could provide would be appreciated.

The New York Red Bulls previously kicked around Major League Soccer as the MetroStars with limited success. But after transforming under a new banner in 2005, the Red Bulls have become a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference. The club has made leaps of progress since its previous incarnation and now has its focus on bringing the league title to New York. The salary is one thing, but I think the real issue is the fee to bring him in. MLS would still be the entity paying Aston Villa the transfer fee, not RedBull. The League still balks at paying huge transfer fees. We'd have been able to get him if he came on a free.

Damn, didn't read that. If this is the case, I don't see why MLS would block it.

Not that I believe any of it.

If La was to get him on loan dose any one no if he would be a DP. if so then LA can kiss that one good bye as they are at the max with DPS.

And just where pray tell does either article explain his desire to spend the kind of money necessary to buy out his contract?

Though actually it could be nice end run around the MLS rules. Have the player buy out his own contract and then pay him an excessively big contract in one year to compensate. That way you get him without technically being the one to pay the transfer fee which is alleged to be a no no.

The league won't allow any team to pay a big transfer fee for a player because they are afraid it will set a precedent and endanger the single-entity structure of the league. I think that's BS, but it is what it is.
