The obvious answer to me is John Wolyniec, with Luke Rodgers behind him.

I was in elementary school during the early days of MLS, so I had literally never heard of Rhett Harty until I read this.

You're right. It's all the right wings fault. Democrats are perfect in their governing and never would have let it become this bad. Democrats can do no wrong.

Meanwhile lunatic Cuomo is trying to put nearly everyone out of business over a virus that has a .007% mortality rate in his state.

This whole thing has taught me that you really, really suck at statistics.  I wish I could live with your level of ignorance; it would make life so much simpler.

#1363927 All coronavirus-related arguing

I'm blaming their trigger-happy reactions, not for who is to blame for the virus spreading.

The coronavirus as of now only has a 1.3% mortality rate in the U.S. That means it's currently non-fatal for 98.7% of the people that contract it. And that doesn't even include the supposed thousands of additional untested patients.

But yeah, let's close everything and fire hundreds of thousands of workers.

A 1.3% mortality rate (we'll ignore that the number will go up as hospitals get overwhelmed) paired with a 50% infection rate means that 2.1 million Americans die.

But sure, cRaZy DeMs ArE oVeRrEaCtInG.

Give me a fucking break.

Yeah I don't get all the Trump hate, other than the usual bitter and insecure left-wing crybabies acting like they always do in trying to find something to blame him for.

He called it a hoax three weeks ago.  He dismantled the pandemic preparedness office two years ago.  He has advocated for cutting the CDC budget for years.

How has Trump NOT completely fucked up, both in years prior and in his response?

That's extremely disappointing. What the hell happens to that champions league spot then if it happens?

US Soccer will just strip it from the Open Cup and re-assign it elsewhere.  They aren't mandated to give the spot to anyone by Concacaf - the Copa MX winner doesn't get into CCL.

#1363647 French left back Jason Pendant

It is crazy that the second biggest team in Paris gets 2,000 people per game.  The people who say NYC should be able to support half a dozen professional soccer teams are insane.

Paris has always been described to me by French people as more of a rugby city.  They didn't have a top-flight soccer champion between 1936 and 1986.

But Americans are often Anglophiles with this sport, and London has 16 professional teams, so that's the comparison that they're making.

Terrible game management regardless of the result.

#1362298 "There is no Offseason" 2020 Thread

Posted by Arsenal14 on 26 February 2020 - 03:54 PM

36 is old, especially in Red Bull years, but it's not old for a keeper.  Even in Red Bull world.  And when you factor in money, it's looking like Jensen and Meara (with his raise) aren't going to be all that different than Robles as far as money goes.

This really doesn't look like it was a money thing. Something else was up.  And usually when that's the case, it's off the field stuff.

36 is old for any athlete.  Petr Cech was useless as a 36-year-old for Arsenal.  Robles isn't Cech, and he was in a year-over-year statistical decline that placed him solidly in the middle of the pack of MLS goalkeepers.

Moving on from Robles was the right decision.

Everything else associated with how it was handled, including signing a mediocre foreign goalkeeper to maybe be the starter, was the wrong decision.

The best teams are built from within

In what world is that true?  Certainly not anywhere in soccer, I can say that confidently.

#1362099 Murillo sold to Belgium

Posted by Arsenal14 on 24 February 2020 - 12:26 PM

I follow Europe closely.  Theyre obviously looking at Belgium players but not really the Jupiler League unfortunately.

Belgium Nats have been powerful for over a decade with top players everywhere.  Most arent staring and starring in their domestic league unfortunately.

Three players left the Belgian league for over 20 million euros this season alone.  Only one was Belgian.  11 players left for over 10 million.

The Eredivisie, which everyone thinks of as THE selling league in Europe, only had 9 players leave for 10 million+.

#1361787 Predictions for 2020

Posted by Arsenal14 on 19 February 2020 - 01:29 PM

Chicago brought in a lot of new guys. Cant rely on last years stats. Plus, not impressed with their new guys or new coach.

Not disagreeing, but for 538 in particular, they rely heavily on xG in the previous season in lieu of statistics from 2020.

I don't see things going well for them.  Wicky, in particular, seemed out of his depth with the U17s.  I have a hard time imagining that he's going to do a good job in MLS.

Edit: I made this post as they were announcing the signing of a $3.3 million-rated, 19-year-old Argentine winger.  Lol we're getting lapped by the fucking FIRE in ambition.

#1361700 Red Bulls need more diversity?

Posted by Arsenal14 on 18 February 2020 - 04:39 PM

Just thinking through the XI:

4 white Americans
3 white Europeans
1 Asian-American
1 black American
1...mixed race South American? (Kaku)
1 black South American

Doesn't really feel like an issue.  Not like we're the Red Sox refusing to integrate for 12 years after Jackie Robinson's debut.

This line from the article though:

"Both Armas and Hamlett are each men of color in their own regard."

Feels like it's a half-step from calling them Uncle Toms.

Outside of Doyle?

Appreciate that he's former Metro, doesn't mean his analysis isn't shit.

Doyle is to the rest of the MLSSoccer brigade as Messi is to Jared Stroud.

#1361446 Preseason in Florida and Arizona

Posted by Arsenal14 on 14 February 2020 - 12:14 AM

The assumption is that he cant play centrally. Do we really know that?  We know he cant score, but the rest of his skill set looks like it could translate to the middle - he can press, he can pass.

I feel like you're arguing against something I'm not saying.

Sims has been a winger in 95% of his professional appearances, including in the PL2.  He might very well be a decent central midfielder eventually, but that doesn't change the underlying principle that signing a DP winger and then focusing on implementing a system that doesn't have wingers is really, colossally dumb.  Whether Sims eventually becomes a decent center mid is completely irrelevant to that, because those resources would have been much better spent on someone who is already accomplished in that role.  Wasting a DP slot on a conversion project that, as you said, is a question mark at best, speaks to pretty lousy judgment and resource allocation in the front office.  Or, in other words, a bunch of people being really fucking stupid.

#1361431 Preseason in Florida and Arizona

Posted by Arsenal14 on 13 February 2020 - 09:03 PM

The two advanced midshipmen's in the 4-2-2-2 don't stay as central, as say Sacha did in the 4-2-3-1.

That's true, but they're emphatically not wingers.  Guys like Sabitzer and Nkunku play there for Leipzig and they're central midfielders in every sense.
