#1325241 Marsch goes

Posted by iced1776 on 10 May 2018 - 08:54 AM

Even the suggestions don't seem to make any sense.   We already know the replacement.  When Marsch was on his way to Salzburg, Armas was going to be named head coach.  No reason to think that won't happen in this case.

Those rumors were pretty unsubstantiated weren't they?

#1325060 Bradley Wright-Phillips

He's having an unreal start to the season. Six goals and four assists in only just over 400 minutes, that's generating almost two goals per game himself!

I've stumbled upon direct footage of that NYCFC fan after testing out his homemade spray can.

Long and Parker do a lot of things really, really well, but man they can be rough trying to play the ball out of the back. Long is a nightmare anytime he has to play the ball while facing his own net, Parker's kind of a mess no matter which way he's facing. That's the final frontier before those two can solidify themselves as one of the league's best duos.

So were we 3-3-3-1 in the second half as well? I thought we switched more to a 4-2-3-1, but I could be wrong. Either way, there was a big space between Davis and the backline that we did not adjust to, and LAG finally began exploiting in that one 20 minute stretch (think of how much time Zlatan had when he drifted back). Marsch should have adjusted and brought Adams more centrally there to support the CBs. It also seemed that the team turned off for a stretch there. I felt that was very unlike the team, and the past weeks we haven't really been tuned up. Marsch mentioned this before the game as well.

Tough to really describe either half with a straight-forward numerical system, the movement up front was pretty abstract. First half looked kinda like a 5-3-2 with Royer playing way up on the left wing, second half a little more like a 4-3-3 with Valot moving into the RW spot. Kaku played deeper than our CAM's ever have which gave the team a pretty fresh look, it was a joy watching him distribute from that spot all game.

Maybe something like this, 1st half on the left 2nd half on the right? edit: couple others pointed out correctly that Murillo really just dropped into Collin's spot with Adams out at RWB. Different look in the 2nd half just came from having a more traditional RW with Valot.

Davis is an interesting choice for the lone defensive midfield spot - he plays smart and has a decent motor but isn't a natural ball winner. He's not gonna scare anyone away from trying to play down the middle of the field. Adams has better closing speed and better tackling, but is a little more of a wildcard. Not an easy decision for Marsch, but I agree with you that it would have been nice to see Adams drop a little more central in the second half.

Pretty sure local blackout rules still apply for ESPN+, so they'll likely have the replay but you won't be able to watch it for 24-48 hours.

Does MSG GO post replays?

How many times has a post began this way?
How many more times to come?

If I knew the secret of how to prevent professional soccer players from blowing ~8 open scoring opportunities in 90 minutes I wouldn't be giving it away for free.

Maybe when they sign another goal-scoring winger? Its been a few years since having both Grella and Sam able to reliably put the ball in the net.

Let's not be hyperbolic.

We had 3-4 good to very good chances (Royer's obviously being the best) in a 90 minute game against a team that was bunkering and countering.  There was a TON of aimless possession, lackadaisical behavior in the final third and just lack of quality on the finishing end.  A draw may have been a fair result yesterday.  We love to take very low quality shots and then after the game scream about how we had double digit shots on goal.  75-80% of those shots aren't a threat to anyone.  That's also a pretty big problem.

I have no idea why more teams don't park the bus against us.  It's a strategy Marsch has been unable to solve.  I also feel like I've seen this exact game 20 times in the past 3+ years.

What you're saying here could probably apply to the home leg against Chivas, but not last night. These weren't half-chances, the team racked up close to double digit clear-cut chances to score. Open shots, in the box, on the attacker's strong foot, some literally at an open net. Valot had two, Kaku had at least that, same for Royer.

This should have been a blowout by the time Katai hit his screamer.

#1324185 Sacha to somewhere

Posted by iced1776 on 22 April 2018 - 08:25 AM

Ultimately I think it was the right move to get rid of Sacha, but was there anyone else available that the club could have gotten from Orlando in return instead of Rivas and Redding?

This Mueller guy is lighting it up for Orlando currently. Red Bull should have been tougher and got him instead of two so-far junk players. The FO should have said if you are going to get the back-to-back MLS assist leader from us, you are going to have to pay a steep price and send a blue-chip prospect the other way.

Instead they caved, got Rivas/Redding and are still paying some of Sachas salary. Two guys Orlando were happy to get rid of (and we can see why). I find it hard to believe there wasnt a better deal to be had here.

Would have been pretty tough to get Mueller considering the trade happened weeks before Orlando drafted him.

Redding was supposed to be that blue chip prospect, and Orlando was definitely not happy to get rid of him. He was a U-20 CB that already had two decent MLS seasons under his belt. That's a much safer gamble than an unproven draft pick like Mueller. I don't think anyone expected Redding to walk into the starting lineup, but his plummet down the depth chart has been pretty shocking.

Frustrating seeing the team create so many chances and come up short, this one should have been over by halftime. As has been the case for a few years, we really need guys not named BWP to start finishing plays. Valot, Royer, and Kaku each could have had a brace today.

Kudos to Katai for the volley, one of the nicest goals I've seen in awhile.

#1323946 2018 CONCACAF Champions League

Posted by iced1776 on 18 April 2018 - 08:43 AM

Tonight showed something that we all already knew. We could have beat Chivas and werent put in a position to do so by Marsch.

I hope Toronto get their asses handed to them in Mexico, and we find a way into next years CCL.

Marsch put the team in a position to win. Was it, in hindsight, the 100% best position to win? No but it was 90% of the way there, the volume of chances doesn't swing so unbelievably heavy in our favor over the two legs if the coach hasn't done his job.

I'm just confused where the accountability towards the players lies. Why is the conversation only on Marsch?

Right?

#1323893 Lineup for 2018

If before he was getting minutes why not now that he's had sparks of much higher quality plays

Put me out there for 3,600 minutes and I'll probably play one impressive pass too.

And we had what, 15? They were particularly ineffective in the 2nd half, not beating the 1st guy most of the time.

I noticed the lack of response re Kaku.

I would have liked to see Kaku out there for longer too, that was a mistake by Marsch.

#1323783 Lineup for 2018

Posted by iced1776 on 15 April 2018 - 06:01 PM

Still wish Marsch would use Etienne on the wing with BWP up top.  Not necessarily all the time, Valot has looked good there, but maybe when we need a goal.  I thought Derrick has been dangerous when he's gotten the ball wide.  He can take guys on 1v1 out there and, I think, can send those hard, low balls across the 6-yard box that BWP knocks in so well.  He'll get enough minutes just spelling BWP if thats the main way that Marsch uses him.

Safe to say at this point that Etienne will be the first attacking player off the bench and rotate into the starting lineup occasionally. There's such a clear maturity in his game this year, especially on defense. Should be fun to watch him and Valot battle it out for minutes.
