They need to get rid of the regional open cup games


No, they don't. The competition is not a moneymaker for most of the participating clubs, as evidenced by the small stadiums and small crowds. Adding long & expensive short-notice flights could cause some penny-pinching clubs to drop out.
With MLS expansion, we will only be playing opponents twice annually. A third game against our neighbors should not bother anyone. If anything, the MLS schedule makers could re-plan its schedule to not match close clubs in June.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Maybe MLS, knowing how Open Cup matches are going to be scheduled, can have certain teams not play each other in that part of the schedule.  Or at least limit those matches.

We have a month of matches all on weekdays.

I don't see why we need as much rotation as everyone is saying. Play a strong team to get our league position up. They'll be missing two key players and we should get at least a point up there.

Then a week off and we're back in Boston with another strong team.
