#1340838 Aaron Long Contract Extension

Im so glad this got done prior to the start of the season.  When you have the (arguably) better of the two CBs in Long on a teachers salary and the other guy making big coin, thats a recipe for resentment and locker room tension.

Will you complain if they crash out of the playoffs again because the cheap moneyball academy guys couldn't find a way to score?

If we win MLS Cup, youd probably complain that the cup isnt shiny enough

I have shifted from being in the disappointed camp to the satisfied camp.  Nailing down Long, Taxi, and Parker is huge.  Plus we look to have signed a potential future replacement for BWP (and reportedly even got a modest transfer fee for Abang!).  We even did okay getting defensive depth in the draft.  So, not too shabby.

Yes, I wanted a stud DP wide player (like everyone else), but not gonna complain

I will Devil's advocate a little now that the Debbie Downers are back.
There is no question that we lost one of our best players in Adams. And that every year that passes we have to get incrementally more worried about BWP's speed and stamina.
But...here are some things that could happen:
What if we get a full year of "1st half" Kaku?
How would you feel about Muyl if he improves his scoring touch?
Or that crowded pack than can play RW creates enough competition that someone of Muyl, Valot Etienne, Ivan, Epps steps up enough to own that position in a positive way?
What if Ivan just needed an adjustment period (not claiming future superstar, just some real contribution).
What if Rza's bigger role results in more scoring from our CMs?
Duncan stays healthy and adds defensive bite in games where that is helpful either as a starter or as a sub to protect leads?
How about White improves enough to give greater rest to BWP during the season?
Jorgensen is signed and by 2nd half is contributing as nice weapon to throw at tiring defenses as a sub.
Casseres establishes himself as a solid CM, softening the departure of Adams.
Continuity should be a real positive as well.
Not all of this will happen, but none of these are huge reaches.

Muyl consistently gets in good positions and works hard on both sides of the ball. His finishing is terrible, however.  If he starts converting chances, people are going to rave about him.  Remember how much we shit on Luyindula for not converting his chances.  He ended up being one of our best players in our 2013 shield run.

Muyl is still developing.  He was great the last few months of the season, and I think hell be better this year.

(Having said that, I really wish we signed a DP level wide player.)

If he's in shape and affordable, I'd see his purpose as a short-term bridge between inexperienced young players and BWP?

Yeah, my opinion that we may want to take a flyer on him was premised on his accepting a SWP type deal.  And if, like SWP hes not good enough at his age to get on the field, then he wont be hindering anyones development.

Did you forget 2015 or is that not recent enough? It's virtually the same scenario. We won the shield, shit the bed on the road in the first leg and came home "with nothing to lose" with the chance to host MLS Cup if we advanced.

The only difference is we were down 2-0 to a shit Columbus team and now we are down 3-0 to a much better Atlanta team.

If only BWP finishes that injury time chance against Columbus.  Oh well.

Yeah we need to collectively get away from the excuses (int'l travel, refs, phantom handballs).  We got outcoached and outplayed. Plain and simple.  The 3rd goal was the worst - absolutely no reason to give up a goal so late in the game.  A 0-2 loss away would have been difficult, but manageable.  Instead we lost our defensive shape and gave up a stupid 3rd goal.

I agree.  If the plan was to get an away goal, we should have pressed from the outset (albeit judiciously).  OTOH, if the plan was to defend and keep the score line manageable, the late subs and the teams loss of shape and tactical indiscipline is unforgivable.  We got the worst of both worldsno away goal AND an unmanageable score line.  Why did we get desperate at 2-0?

I would have played ATL exactly the same way we did in our two prior encounters.

Folks, the fix is in by Garber and MLS to showcase a packed Mercedes Benz stadium with a raucous crowd for MLS Cup! Did we really believe we had a chance?

Easy tin foil hat.  Theres no fix in.  Do people really think MLS HQ is asking the refs to fix the match????   Why dont you tell me about the deep state while youre at it.

We lost because we played like shit.

People have been criticizing Murillos crossing, but I thought his defending was poor as well.  He gave Meram oodles of space.

#1334308 What is Muyl good at?

is It me or did Muyls form improve once he got a normal haircut?

Muyl seems to specialize in those balls that look like they're going to go over the end line for a goal kick? But he darts in and just gets a last second touch in back towards goal and someone's there to tap it in. Defenses appear to give up on the play, thinking the ball is going out, but there he is to keep it in.

Yeah, he did this in DC too for BWP's final goal.  Say what you will about Muyl, but no one can take issue with his effort.

I think Taxi's interest from abroad weakened a bit. On top of the Jamaica not being ranked high enough, Taxi is 26 now and plays a position that isn't going to get as much interest from these other teams who have X amount of foreign openings.  If they are going foreign, they are going to go for a position that has a bigger impact.
Long term, I'm a huge fan of Taxi.  He's a great guy, is captain material, and he's good enough and has the skillset to transition to CB down the road when his mobility drops a bit.

I think the only thing stopping Taxi from getting a big Euro deal is his lack of comfort using his right foot.  Same thing I think held Lindpere back.  Otherwise he is the complete package.

It is kinda remarkable how much of bust Escobar and Ndam have been.   I thought maybe Baah was the good luck/bad luck balance on Long, but we' are definitely on the wrong side of that ledger overall.

A bit too soon to comment on Ndam.  He's young and performed admirably when he was called upon by the first team.

#1333291 Tim Parker was NOT an abomination

Posted by sec201 on 17 September 2018 - 12:27 PM

To be fair, there has been a marked decline in Parker's performance over the past 4 or 5 games.  Not sure what's up.  I'm less concerned about hanging on to him after this season than I was previously.  I rate Long as the better defender now (and certainly a better passer of the ball).  Hope he sorts himself out for the stretch run.
