MetroFanaticDan might have to confirm my figures on this, but as of this weekend's draw at DC, "New York Red Bulls/Red Bull New York" have played 15 fewer competitive matches than "NY/NJ MetroStars/MetroStars"

Metro: 352 total

MLS Regular Season: 306

MLS Playoffs: 19

US Open Cup: 21

International (Mecronorte): 6

Red Bulls: 337 total

MLS Regular Season: 292

MLS Playoffs: 22

US Open Cup: 17

International (CCL): 6

Assuming that count is right, sometime in July, depending on how the Open Cup goes, the franchise will have played the majority of its competitive matches as "Red Bulls."

Make of that what you will. The facts are the facts.

And, for what it's worth on the statistical front:

Metro record in all competitions:  146-167-39  (45.1% of total points won)

Red Bulls record in all competitions:  123-118-96  (45.9% of total points won)

Red Bulls have more wins than losses as compared to the Metrostars. The only thing that matters is hardware. Red Bulls 1 - 0 Metrostars.

These stats explain a lot about the lack of reaction from most fans about Mike Petke's firing.

You're aware a lot of those losses took place due to MLS abandoning ties back in the day...right?  Nah, who am I kidding, you're not aware.

In terms of cups: Metro/RB = 0.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

In terms of cups: Metro/RB = 0.

To be fair, a number of those wins from the Metro days were also obtained via the shootout.

Let's for the sake of argument, say that all tie games from 1996-1999 ended after 90 minutes. Each teams split a point. This is Metro's record.

1996: 12–15–5

1996: 11–17–4

1998: 12–17–3

1999: 4–20–8

That lowers Metro's record from 50-78-0 (150 points) to 39-69-20 (137 points)

It would lower Metro's total winning percentage (points / max number of points) from 45.17% to 43.94%.

I know about the crazy rules MLS adopted during the early years. That is why the Red Bulls have a lot more draws than the Metrostars. Either way, i would say the Red Bull era has been slightly more successful.

This is stupid comparison. Whos to say JPA & Henry wouldnt have come here regardless of who owned the club? Whos to say we wouldn't have achieved the same level of success if not more.

Youre also comparing two completely different eras, with completely different circumstances. And its not just the shootout, its the salary cap, the amount of MLS clubs, the lack of overall academies across the league, the lack of proper facilities for ALL MLS clubs, etc etc. Its like comparing NFL Clubs of the 60's with the same clubs today.

I think its an interesting tidbit, but thats just what it is a tidbit.
