#1444258 Is Vanzeir a bust?

Posted by elf on 18 March 2024 - 10:59 AM

That is an oversimplification, Struber pressed harder than any Red Bull coach and that system was a nightmare for strikers. Struber and Klimala themselves were on record several times that the way they played made it difficult for strikers to score.

20+ goals obviously isn't impossible but I think it'll continue to be an anomaly in MLS. You need a generational talent on an elite team that prioritizes setting up their forward for tap-ins. I'm higher on Vanzeir than most, but he's not a generational talent. We're better this year than last, but we're not elite (yet). Schwarz finally has us playing with the ball again, but we're still not creating a high volume of simple chances. I don't think a 20+ goal season is in the cards for our strikers even if the season overall ends up going well.

Marsch implemented a very direct pressing system similar to Struber's, which proved successful. The pressing system creates easier scoring opportunities, but it requires players who can shoot accurately and convert those chances.

It wasn't Struber or  lesesne system that caused a scoring issue. it is a talent issue.  we currently lack forwards who are efficient shooters.

Since BWP's last season, all our forwards, except White, have struggled with their accuracy and scoring efficiency.

Halftime. Pretty dominant half, especially on the attacking side.

O'Connor reminds me a lot of Sean Nealis.

Sofo has speed and skill. Lacks size but has a good enough touch to make up for it.

Mina definitely a more deliberate attacking wingback. Built like Olave. A bit reckless at times.

I like sofo. I hope he is given a chance with the first team.

A lot is made of Vanzeir's partner, but I think the issue is more in how our coaches are using him. Struber wouldn't know how to get Cristiano Ronaldo to score goals, Lesesne let him roam free in the midfield, and now Schwarz has him making more runs to the corner flag or playing him as a right winger.

There have been almost no patterns of play since Vanzeir's arrival that include him making a run into the box at the same time that someone is looking to play him in. It makes it really hard to judge him as a player because this is supposed to be what he excels at, and he's not even being put in a position to try.

It can't get much worse for Vanzeir than the first 15 minutes of the second half against Houston in that RW spot. Some clips here of him and Edelman coughing it up time after time, mostly Vanzeir.

If the game plan will continue to ask him to play mostly in the open field, then swapping him for another DP this summer might be the best move for everyone. But then again, that scares me because I was confident they'd flip Luqui and here we are with an open DP spot. I feel like selling him over the summer just means we end 2024 with two open DP spots.

the simple answer is that he is not a DP. the guy we saw in clips is not the same guy that is playing with RBNY.

what we need in the midfield position is a speedy goal scorer. he is not speedy or a goal scorer. i think Harper fits better with what the team needs. Maybe the new Scandinavian kid ends up winning the job.

if they could sell him this summer, they should do it.

Posted by elf on 29 February 2024 - 11:55 AM

Lame. Though it is cool its tied to regular season performance. The CCC exemption is weird to me. So teams that are like 3-8 in each conference might be eligible for Open Cup. I guess they are trying to make it something like Europa Cup, but domestic?

It's not cool. They  are trying to make the cup meaningless.

Its kinda like when US Soccer gave MLS to promote the US Open Cup and didn't. Then MLS complains abt the marketing.

Or when MLS has a marquee game in RBNY v NYCFC and they play the game in Hartford to suppress attendance.

This is mickymouse bs.

US Soccer has weak leadership if they had any courage they will force MLS to play.

It's funny how MLS is crying about "congestion" but avg about 38 games a season and then many teams dont play games for almost 4 months.

The congestion is terrible.  Lol

Then we look at europe and most teams play around 50 games and the Brazilian league teams play close to 66 games.

Some of those euro teams have smaller squads  to MLS teams but have the luxury to call up youth players without restrictions.

The infrastructure is here to do so.

Now, we are going to get punished for their mickymouse rules. This is bs.

People should stop going to games.

#1443391 Should Forsberg be the captain?

Posted by elf on 28 February 2024 - 07:10 PM

he could have stayed if he wanted. We presented the idea and he wanted to leave and come here. He had flirted with leaving leipzig a bit over the past year and a half

He could have stayed but his role was reduced. Plus, there is no reason why liepzig would have agreed to give him a similar salary to what he is getting at RBNY.

He came to ny because this was his best opportunity.  It's no knock on him or his ability. It is the reality. We got lucky that he fell on rbny's lap or else they would still be searching for the "right fit" or ask the fanbase for patience.

Btw, was Forsberg Schnider's doing or finally RB Synergy that worked? It's a huge signing which deserves a lot of credit, but is not really consistent with his otherwise shitty record, hence thinking could be synergy at work.

Liepzig needed to off load him to make other signings and rbny benefitted

#1443329 Some people think Luquinhas didn't suck that much

Posted by elf on 27 February 2024 - 04:12 AM

Im not trying to minimize Luqs free kicks won. I just dont think it makes up for his low numbers in other attacking stats.

LuqS numbers are less than half of an elite AM like Gil, I think that puts him below average.

Gil is also playing with more offensive talent.

When luq had a healthy morgan, he was very dangerous but the moment morgan fell apart teams just focused on luq. Some folks on this board might say that a DP player should be able to overcome that. They are expecting Forsberg to do that and that is high expectations and unfair to the guy since soccer is a team sport.

Last season, Who did luq have  on the offensive end that finished opportunities or gave him space to operate? No one.

Now imagine a healthy morgan at forward and having luq and Forsberg behind him? That would have been a lot of fun to watch

yeah luqi had no understanding of tempo or how to control pace. Didnt make his teammates much better. Also his career dream was to go to Brazil and they paid a transfer for him

when your offensive teammates are vanzier, burke, manoel and barlow you need more than just talent to make them look better. you need divine intervention.

Did I miss all of Luq's chance creations and goals last year?  The team looked really good in midfield yesterday, I don't think we missed him.  Not sure how he would mesh with Forsberg either.  Forsberg seems to play with intent, Luq just kind of dribbled until he got fouled.  The biggest argument for Luq yesterday was that maybe one of his dives could have won a PK.

Luq has the ability to drive towards goal and the only way to stop him was to foul him. in a late game situation or when a team bunkers, you need guys like him. it would have been fun to see him combine with forsberg.  It would have given Forsberg more set piece opportunities to either shoot or set up a team mate.

We hit the post 3 times today. Sometimes the ball isn't in your favor.

We have been seeing this same story for the past 5 years.

At somepoint, it's not a luck thing but a talent issue.

#1442859 No MLS in 2024 Open Cup

Posted by elf on 20 February 2024 - 03:30 PM

Dude come on this argument is ridiculous.

Do you really think people will stop going to Inter Miami games to see Messi if they played in the Open Cup (which nobody attends or watches) and lost to some random USL team?

Miami could lose every game this year and their matchups still will be the highest attended in the league.

To say no one watches the US open Cup is misleading.  The total attendance for the US Open Cup is the highest I have ever recalled. If you look at the 1996 attendance numbers to now, last year was the highest ever. CBS also recently purchased the tv rights to broadcast the US Open Cup.

This was never about US Open Cup but it was about control. MLS wants to be the entity that dictates soccer in the US but that responsibility belongs to US Soccer. inter miami was just an example on how things could back fire.

#1442600 Random Player Name Thread 2024

Posted by elf on 14 February 2024 - 11:41 PM

I'd go after taylor... not sure if he fits, but he has that same vibe of Morgan, Forsberg...

Gregore has the passing ability, but he's a touch slow for a CDM, no?

I dont think miami would give up taylor unless they get a lot of allocation money for him. He has a very affordable contract and a decent talent that can play almost any position.

Yedlin, mota or gregore are prob the candidates.
Unfortunately, they dont fit a need.

The only way I would take them is if miami gives us a permanent foreign slot, multiple draft picks or allocation money.

#1442599 Do we have a forward?

Posted by elf on 14 February 2024 - 11:25 PM

That's what I get for throwing out an obviously awful suggestion, I guess.

Przyzblko sucks, guys.  I've watched him in person like a dozen times in the last 2 years.  He can't run, he can't finish, he's mid at best in the air despite his height, and he makes like $1 million a year.

He would fit perfectly:-D

To be fair elf beats this drum every off season, that some teenager from the academy will be next years hero

Because for the past decade it has been, sadly, the best way to get a decent player.

Whenever RBNY spends money, they underestimate the level of MLS, overpay for someone and then  take too long move on from that player.
