Well this was a tough but inevitable decision. After sitting here in Shanghai for two years trying to watch LA Galaxy games on line I realized video and on line forums were not going to cut and I would need to report to my local team supporters group to get my terrace fix. China 'Super' League is in a real pit - no sponsor, games fixed, teams paid off, and right now, four referees in the dock for taking pre-game bribes including China's only World Cup experienced ref.
Nevertheless it is the only game in town, so last Friday I took five friends down to Hongkou stadium, walked into the VIP room at the stadium hot pot restaurant and sat down with the Blue Devils supporters group honchos to sign up for two season seats (50 USD each) behind the goal. Lolling around the restaurant were obvious gangster=gambler types who eyed us suspiciously but we were swiftly adopted by the supporters who got us our extra tix and pointed us in the right direction. The game experience was loud and vocal, no flares and the match on the pitch was gloriously shambolic with Qingdao equalizing in the 95th minute 3-3. I consider this a temporary solution as my stronger team loyalties lie elsewhere.

Another foreign devil has a better blog out than I could ever do here.

(A) to incite resistance, undermine the Constitution and laws, administrative regulations implemented;

© incitement to split the country and undermining national unity;
(D) to incite ethnic hatred, ethnic discrimination, undermining national unity;
(E) fabrication or distortion of the facts, spread rumors, disturbs social order;

You're a good man.

As they say, when in China, do as the Party does. Or something like that.

If only our Eurosnobs comrades would have the same epiphany. Ironically, their snobbery only makes the sell that much tougher since the league needs support to grow to be able to get better talent to get more support. Chicken. Egg.

Cheers, thanks all for the kind words. It's Tuesday 630pm, and I'm alone in a Shanghai sidewalk bar watching on the big screen as Shanghai take on
Sydney FC in the Asian Champions League. The Aussies are here at the club level too since they joined Asia back in the middle of the decade. The
Chinese score thanks to a shot by Pupi (!), a Brazilian import, that deflects off a defender but the diggers put on the pressure and with our 1st string
GK out our number 2 is porous and allows an equalizer five minutes later. The Aussies dominate for the rest of the half but we get a breakaway miss then
another shot hits the underside of the crossbar and caroms out. Halftime. I switch to my laptop and catch up on the MLS to learn that the Mormons will
play in our CL final. Getting a result in Saprissa is like pulling out a point in Azteca to props to them.

I still have no idea what anyone is saying here. I'm finally taking Mandarin lessons but it's just a fig leaf. At least I can do a proper 'Goooooooooooooooooooool" for
the locals whenever anyone I am supporting scores. It amuses them no end. 2nd half starting.
Here's a shot of our end before the Mar. 2 ACL match with Kashima Antlers J League

Shenhua hung on in a fugly fashion to eke out a 1-1 in Sydney and
earn their 1st point in ACL, the Aussies will come to Shangers on
April 19. I'll have to see if I can offer them a pint and a peace pipe at the Bulldog pub on
Wulumuqi Road near the old French and Yank Consulates on
Huahai Road (Former Marshal Joffre Boulevard).

The ref story came out last month after a year of investigation, the perps
on TV in their orange vests (read county blues) admitting everything,
while the video rolls of the matches they threw!! Lu Yun was bribed
by Shanghai Shenhua in the derby with Shanghai Inter in 2003 with
the title on the line!! Read more:

"Investigators said prior to a match between the Shanghai International
and Shanghai Shenhua teams Nov. 9, 2003, Zhang Jianqiang, a former
official of the China Football Association, asked Lu to call the game in Shanghai Shenhua's favor.
Zhang allegedly promised commissions would be paid to Lu and other referees if Shanghai Shenhua won the game.
Lu later confessed he tried to give "emotional care" to Shanghai Shenhua players by treating them less strictly.

After a 4-1 victory in that match, Shanghai Shenhua went on to win the year's domestic league championship.
"Shanghai Shenhua later brought commissions worth 700,000 yuan ($106,000) to my office," Zhang allegedly
confessed. "Lu and I each got 350,000 yuan ($53,000)."
Zhang was arrested for alleged match-fixing and bribery in March 2010."

It gets better. One week before the season starts in 2007 the announcement is made by both owners
that Shenhua is BUYING Inter and the two teams are to be MERGED. One week before the season.
The Inter Supporters take the other end of the stadium and hurl abuse at my side the Blue Devils
while 'supporting' their new abortion of a team. We saw them again last match. Their chants had
special insults based on the latest revelations.

I understand Sicilian football is like this too. Shaping up to be an interesting season.

Oh and I WILL to an away supporter sometime this season to Zhejiang or Nanjing.

I watched Shanghai play on the road in some northern Chinese industrial pit, Liaoning,
this weekend after suffering through a jumpy arabic feed of LAG-DC on Al Jazeera
sports ("why are the DC fans waving their flags, did they get a penalty kick call or
something? ... oh shit)

There's that borderline moment in any third world football game when it appears that
the ref is going to lose control of the game, a full on punch out between both teams
and benchs seems imminent and a fan pitch invasion is about to follow. We came
very close to this in Shenhua's 1-0 loss to Liaoning. The camera actually was ordered
to pan back to a long distance shot during the shoving (what purpose does that serve?)
but after a red and a few yellows order was restored. Shanghai couldn't score but
blood was spilled when Pupi took an elbow and walked around with streams of Type
O pouring down from his eye socket. Blood sport.

Speaking of blood, anyone want to help this young lady in Tsingtao out?

Sat afternoon, watching Shenhua on TV playing away in a province I can't find
in my mind - Henan, maybe near Beijing? We're up 1-0 on a dubious penalty
and wherever you go in this league you can't escape the refereeing. The Shanghai
English language TV station ICS had a feature on the ref payoff scandal of
2003 with a reenactment of the envelope of cash passing across the table. Then
they mentioned something I had no idea might happen eight years later - the
team will be getting a points deduction in the standings this year! These season
crushing penalties are usually 15 poiints or something like that. Can't we just
pay a fine? Oh...right... :unsure:

I picked a great year to support this team. Next match at home Shandong Friday the 29th
The Shanghai Ultra has some good new posts on his blog, wildeastfootball.

Will try to stream Timbers at LAG but links have been patchy, may be match tracking again.
