I'd just be surprised they were so thoroughly unimpressed with Troy that they'd drop him this early in the offseason without having a bigger hire in mind. He wasn't that bad, I would have expected they'd at least let him throw his name in the hat if they were exploring all options. Could be wrong, just my read on the situation.

 

Hamlett is what it is, I don't understand why he even still had a role here other than showing the new GM where the bathroom is.

They very clearly were doing back channel diligence for coach alternative when we in our late summer struggles, which we know from Sacramento leak.  Troy gave them something to think about based on the end of the season but its hard to turn away once you start looking.  The only strange part is with Hamlett gone too (thank god) based on statements think a coach comes before the sporting director.  Now maybe Jochen is taking a more hands on role so it doesnt matter, but most SD jobs look better when you can pick your coach

 

I think Troy is an above average coach with potential to become a good one.  But its totality understandable for Mario and Jochen to not want to go through massive spending overhaul with a guy they dont have more conviction is a good coach now.

The big loser here is Zach Prince, who gave up a head coaching job to be Lesesne's assistant and is now out of work. Oh well. At least he "coached" us in that losing shootout... and in that 0:0 draw at NYC.

bet he doubled his salary and I think his time at New Mexico was coming to an end regardless

Sort of on the flip side, in a way, Jochen has really done Lesesne, Prince, and Hamlett a solid by letting them go so early. If he knew Lesesne is not the guy, the best thing to do is to not string him along until they ink the replacement. He was always sort of interim tagged and they very quickly set him free. 

 

I could easily see situation where they opened a coaching competition, and Lesesne ends up without a job 2 months from now, with much fewer options. 

 

Lesesne will bounce right back from this. From outside perspective, RB was nothing but straightforward and honest with Lesesne and gave him a huge jump in his career by having him coach Leagues Cup, 70% of an MLS season, and the playoffs - all with an ok result considering roster.

I'm no Troy hater but I don't know if this makes it such a no brainer to keep him either. Troy's PPG was still pretty poor while benefitting from better luck with finishes and penalty calls than Struber got to start the season. Would have gotten us the same #8 seed over the course of the season. And the team looked it's best under him when they were essentially building off of Struber's tactics, our PPG during Troy's "tinkering" phase were below the playoff line.

Agreed with all that to start his tenure, but he turned the team around. By the end of it the team was fun to watch again in every game, even though they lost in play-offs. This is something that Struber did not achieve with the current roster. And he had even a better roster with CCJ.

Yeah agree with this. I think he really turned the ship around and the widespread perception was that the team was a hot mess (which it was). He will get another shot and he deserves one.

Obviously, Barlow can't be the planned starter for 2024, but this is an interesting take. 

 

How dependent on Barlow's front press was Lesesne's success at the end? Or how important did he see it? I feel like you might be on to something here with this prediction. Lesesne gets another job and pulls Barlow over.

Barlow played the same role in the same formation early in the season when we stunk. So apologies to the resident "Barlow is actually good at soccer" salesman, but I'm not buying it lol.

Only way I'm in 100% agreement with you here is if Troy ends up taking over a USL side instead of MLS.

Honestly I think Charlotte had the right assessment and decision coming out of that game. Their coach did more to beat them than any of Lesesne, Barlow, or Manoel (even including the hattie)

Yea, being able to press shouldn't exclude a striker from also being able to find the back of the net at a reasonable rate.
