#1416140 Red Bull is incompetent

Looks like they got rid of that division.

They didn't. It isn't shown on the diagram but if you look at the prices some sections have a range shown, because the lower seats are more expensive.

Whited out sections.. Back to the tarps or are they finally moving forward with the mysterious "construction?"

#1409841 MLS TV moves to Apple

Posted by CurbYourNewUrbanism on 14 June 2022 - 12:19 PM in MetroFanatic.com

Is MSG still contracted for next season?

No, this year is the end for them. There will no longer be any local broadcasters in MLS.

#1409838 MLS TV moves to Apple

Apples MLS deal will start next season, coinciding with a restructuring of the MLS schedule that will see most regular season matches played on Saturday nights. Having a series of matches Saturday nights with staggered start times will allow the league to offer a whip-around show akin to NFL Red Zone through its new streaming service and AppleTV+ - sports biz journal

That sounds awesome.

As a fan this deal sounds great, and I especially love that they are giving it to season ticket holders for free.

This does effectively eliminate the league getting virtually any casual exposure ever again, though. It seems like quite a gamble.

Word seems to be that a bomb threat was called in, which is why the gates opened late. Cars being searched with dogs coming in. Not that I expect a full stadium or anything but I do think there are a lot of people delayed getting in tonight.

Seems like people dont understand how easy it is to buy a ticket to this game. You can go buy a three game plan with Barcelona, NYCFC, and Miami for under $200 on the website right now, yet someone just bought my ticket to the Barca match for $350.

You can take NJ Transit train to Montclair Heights, I believe is the name of the stop. Takes roughly 50 minutes, if memory serves.

There's a train leaving Penn at 6:41 that gets to Montclair Heights at 7:31. Coming home there's a train at 10:29 or 11:17 if it goes to extra time.

One upside of NJT vs PATH: Train beers.

#1407842 2022 US Open Cup

Embarrassing that this game is not at RBA. 4 wins away from a major trophy and we choose to play this game on turf at a glorified high school field, with no train accessibility. It's a joke.

I don't want to hear "we wont get that many fans anyway" First of all, that's such a defeatist attitude. The FO can't even be bothered to try anymore.  And secondly, we let Gotham FC and even Homeless FC use RBA whenever they want even though they get less than 5k per game there.

I completely agree with you and am pretty irritated about this, but there is a train station right beside the stadium. It's a lot more annoying to get there from the city than taking the PATH to RBA, but still pretty easily doable. I've done it to see RBII and plan to do it for this game.

There are trains that arrive there basically every 20 minutes before the game during the PM rush. The bad part is after; there's a train at 9:14 but if the game isn't over in time the next one isn't until 10:29.

#1407329 How much time is the ball in play?

Posted by CurbYourNewUrbanism on 06 May 2022 - 10:21 AM in MetroFanatic.com

semi-related: can anyone explain to me why stoppage time is always longer on the second half?

I think because that's when most or all of the substitutions tend to happen.

Don't think it's completely accurate: https://www.cascadia...zgoda-payments/

Red Bulls apparently made the payments for Patryk Klimala, avoiding any sanctions, although the club denied allegations of missed payments.

#1403971 NYCFC is owned by slavers

Posted by CurbYourNewUrbanism on 15 March 2022 - 11:05 AM in MetroFanatic.com

Sure it was.  Until the sexy new neighbor moved in next door.

Even this I'm skeptical of, though maybe it is just one of many little factors that add up.

The first three years of the blue team's existence we had our 4th, 2nd, and 1st highest attendance seasons at RBA. That first game at Yankee Stadium the entire upper deck was basically taken over by our fans. It truly felt in the beginning like a "rising tide lifts all boats" scenario where there was going to be a mutual benefit due to the increased buzz in the market.

Then suddenly it fell apart, and not just for us. Their attendance has declined every year except 2018. I guess the novelty wore off?

The PATH shutdown was brutal. That was definitely a year I struggled to get anyone to go, especially anyone who had gone once and experienced it. Even worse was that they had already just done it for an entire year several years before.

#1403899 (No) attendance, again

Posted by CurbYourNewUrbanism on 14 March 2022 - 04:14 PM in MetroFanatic.com

I think just like the academy pipeline, there is a lead time in regaining fan interest. Stadium opened 2010. Henry was here 2010-2014. The 25 year olds who came in 2012 are 35 now and have other requirements at 7:30 on a Sunday night.

This certainly rings very true for me personally and you may have hit on something that I never considered, that fans are always cycling in and out and we may have just never generated the next cycle. I'm 36 now and started going in 2011. I had a pretty consistent large group of friends that would go to games from roughly 2011 to 2016. It was always a big day out, the pre-game sangria at El Pastor, etc. They're all gone now; either moved away or lost interest or stopped having the free time to go to games.

#1403893 (No) attendance, again

Posted by CurbYourNewUrbanism on 14 March 2022 - 03:18 PM in MetroFanatic.com

I can't say the attendance has a huge impact on my enjoyment of going to games one way or another, but I do wonder sometimes what the players think about it.

I'm also just extremely curious to know what is going on behind the scenes. I know all sports teams keep this kind of stuff close to the vest, but I would love to see the underlying numbers to understand where the drop off came from. The season ticket base? Casual ticket purchasers? Less freebies, group sales, and discounted tickets? The decline happened so fast that it's a real curiosity. 2017 was the highest attendance season other than the inaugural year (at least in terms of official tickets sold/distributed).

It feels like this came on so rapidly without many external factors (as much as people want to blame being a feeder team, not winning MLS Cup, etc. I'm not convinced that suddenly caused thousands of people to just stop coming).

Anecdotally it feels to me like the base of die hard fans hasn't really changed that much, but casual viewers have just evaporated. It softens the blow of sitting in a half empty stadium because it's cool that everyone else there is so into the game, but it's just very strange. What did the team do or not do to just suddenly lose casual attendees so suddenly?

The Vanguard is a great pregame spot. Good beer list, lots of Red Bull fans there whenever I've gone.

I just wish there was something nearby with a big outdoor space. I really miss El Pastor and Catas.

Also possible that a ton of people canceled their memberships for 2020 and/or 2021 and now some of those people are returning and counting as "new."

Which would still be a good thing.

Not sure where else to put this but some tidbits from an interview with de Grandpre: https://twitter.com/...b1vzatR2imm2dvQ

  • Claims membership renewal rate is in the mid-80s
  • "We've sold more new memberships than we ever did pre-pandemic"
  • Claims really positive ticket sale trends
  • Suites have all been renovated - "We're redoing the building"

#1402581 Inernational slot count 2022

Posted by CurbYourNewUrbanism on 28 February 2022 - 12:12 PM in MetroFanatic.com

Bringing this topic back up after the Fletcher signing. I know we always get concerned about international slots and it never is actually an issue, but I am legitimately curious how this is going to be managed this season. The deadline for players to have a green card that counts for this season was Friday. The official site still lists CCJ as occupying an international slot. Unless he or someone else got a green card and just hasn't been updated yet these are the players we could realistically expect to be in the squad when everyone is healthy:

1. Klimala

2. Reyes

3. Yearwood

4. Luquinhas

5. Fletcher

6. Edwards

7. Carmona

8. Morgan

9. Coronel

10. Casseres

11. Monzon

Not counted: Castellano (likely RB2 all season), Pendant (gone?), Jensen (loaned).

So that's 11 right there, already 1 over the number of slots we have. I guess we can expect one of Monzon or Carmona to not make the squad each week. But that leads to the question of what happens if they sign someone else? Struber said they are still trying to sign another player or two and all the rumors we've seen have been internationals. I'm not sure how they make that work.

This is another reason why losing Davis hurt so much and why it's critical to continue developing and adding players like Long, Nealis, Clark, Amaya, Fernandez, and Tolkin.

And since the 10th international slot is only for this season we really need more players to get green cards for 2023. Getting that 9th international slot permanently seems more and more ridiculous each year. Just a spectacularly dumb move by Houston.

I'll be honest I find it absolutely hilarious that by all appearances Denis Hamlett didn't get the memo that he had effectively been rubber roomed, and instead of finding another job just hung around for two years, long enough to find himself basically in charge again.
