#1336416 Playoff format changes expected next year

Posted by 999duo on Today, 08:25 AM

I hope we don't get fucked on away goals this year and the format changes next year.

I do love that they are going to single elimination and getting rid of the stupid away goals rule though.

Season starting in February is going to be interesting. I can see that being really bad for attendance in a lot of places with the cold weather though they could try to have more teams in the south and out west host more during that month. Or maybe have 1pm games so it won't be as bad.

I don't mind the cold at all, just don't see us having good attendance when it's freezing cold out in February for an early regular season game.

Author kind of implied that teams in warmer locales would be expected to host in Feb (Miami, Orlando, Nashville, LAs, Texas teams, etc.).

Summary for those of you without subscription:
-Condensed Regular season next year: Still Starts in March, will end first week of October. At least two more weekday games per team.
-7 Teams from each conference to make playoffs. So only conference winner get bye. This is apparently in anticipation of the leagues goal of 28 teams.
-Playoff Format will be single game rounds. No two leg matches.
-MLS Cup to be held before international break.
-Season could potentially begin in February in future years to mitigate condensed schedule/avoid giving non-playoff teams too much time off.
-Author hints (in follow up on Reddit) that cap on charter flights might be lifted in future years.

You know it was an OK game when the topic of discussion is 'was anyone not good?'

Team overall played very well. I think Armas is less stubborn than Marsch. The RB system has largely been play straight through the middle, Jesse at one point even gave a presentation where he showed how RB teams created goals attacking straight down the middle, but Armas recognized that we needed to attack down the flanks to win.

Whole team was good. People will say BWP was invisible but he still did the little things to keep the D honest and create chances. Just by capturing the D's attention he played a big role.

Midfield won the game. I think that was Adam's best game ever. Muyl was also huge, arguably his best game (even if you don't count the goal credited to him). Davis and Royer also had great games. Kaku seemed to get less touches but he didn't do anything wrong, might just be that CBus was paying more attention to him since our offense usually flows through him. Kemar also looked sharp. Robles wasn't asked to do much, but had 1 excellent save iirc. Not much to complain about. Hope it carries over to Atlanta.

Pathetic as usual. Cant believe I was optimistic.

Just watched the highlights. The one thing that stood out: Orlando's Goalkeeper was wearing #99. That feels so confusing and wrong.

Team will officially qualify for the playoffs with a win.

A NE loss or draw or a DC loss also clinches a playoff birth for us regardless of what happens.

We cannot be caught by Orlando, Chicago, Toronto, and Montreal already.

Ref letting a lot go.

Our set pieces have not been well-taken so far.

Smurfs may have the most incompetent ball kids in the league.

Hoping game goes as well as the playoff game in Chicago last year!

We will actually have played 1 more game than Atlanta by the end of the month (wtf MLS?), so it's time to make those games-in-hand count!

#1330819 Watching Etienne wiff chance after chance

Etienne can/will get better. I honestly think once he gets 1 or 2 confidence will rise and he'll start cooking.

Dempsey is completely washed up. He's done. Hard pass on that one. Seattle is only still playing him because their season is effectively over.

Royer has 4 goals, of which I believe 2 were penalty's  , he has the most shots on the team and also 0 assists. I like him but his performance is not what it was last year.

Well hopefully he turns the corner soon. Only 1 PK btw. In typical fashion this team has been awarded 2 PKs. Atlanta meanwhile has about 20.

Lade played fine. Murillo just got back from Russia, Kutler's played one game. I give Armas a pass there. As crappy a game as it was there are 17 more to play this season.

I have no idea why the announcers are blaming Long, that was a horrible pass by Adams.

Disorganized play with no rythm from both sides, crappy stadium with bad angles, unconscious comparisons being made by everyone to quality of play in World Cup, both teams switch extroverted outspoken coaches for quiet introverts. . . Hasn't been a great game to watch so far.

#1328942 Marsch goes

Posted by 999duo on 06 July 2018 - 09:35 AM

I will miss Marsch and wish him well. I think he did a fine job here. He took the job in a tough position and had to win the fans over after the Petke firing and he did. He made some tough calls with shipping out popular players, but I genuinely believe that every move he made was designed to make the club better and not due to some petty personal BS--something very common in sports but largely absent during his tenure. Hope Armas is the one to lead us to the promised land. Hats off to Marsch--an articulate, intelligent, and passionate coach.
