All 26 teams will play in Orlando. 16 consecutive days of matches to begin.

  • West: 3 groups of 4 teams
  • East: two groups of 4 teams, one group of 6 teams (I know makes not sense and will ultimately screw us)
  • "Seeded teams"--Toronto, Atlanta, Orlando (Host, placed in 6-team group), LAFC, Seattle, RSL
  • All teams play 3 group stage games which count toward regular season standings
  • Top 2 in each group plus 4 best third place finishers (regardless of conference) advance to round of 16
  • Winner gets champions league birth

Edit: Draw is tomorrow for group stage.

Weird, clunky, but I am open to embracing it. Glad to see the guys will be back on the field soon.

So in a 6-team group, but teams only play 3 games? Weird. Yes, we'll get that one.

Absolutely fucking stupid. Should just play the damn regular season games down there if they want to keep the league in a bubble. Not surprised at all that this league came up with something as dumb as this.

Yep. Pretty sure this was necessitated by scheduling as they couldn't afford the 'bye' that a group with an odd number of teams would necessitate. There will be 16 consecutive days of matches to begin.

NBA did the same thing.

NBA did the same thing.

A little different, because they had just a handful of games left in their season, but seriously, people, everyone's just trying to figure this shit out as best they can

I don't follow the NBA but their setup looks better than this, they are also trying to finish this season and aren't kicking it off with a dumb tournament.

There's no reason to do this tournament, just play the damn regular season games down there.

This is also important...

Concacaf Champions League spot: In a one-time change to MLS berths to the annual Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, the MLS is Back Tournament winner will earn a spot in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, regardless of whether it is a U.S. or Canadian club. This berth replaces the one traditionally awarded to the regular-season conference leader that did not win the Supporters Shield.

This calls for a Yogi-type quote:
It takes a lot of planning to accomplish so little.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

So you would ask the players to be away from their families for ~4 months?

Were gonna win this thing because its largely meaningless.

Which will then lead to new deals with both Armas and Hamlett.

Whatever. Im just happy to have something to bitch about other than Coronavirus.

All aboard the Metro Partial Playoff Fever train!

9:30 am, to avoid the heat. Gonna be taking a lot of early morning meetings...

No, I would just play some regular season games down there to kick off the season cause they want to see how things go and then go back to playing games in home stadiums in what will probably be no fans for awhile.

I just don't see any point in playing this tournament and pushing the MLS cup playoffs back even further. Playing all regular season games down there instead of just 3 that will count towards the regular season would have at least made more sense.

They could have had each team play 7 regular season games down there before going back to their home stadiums instead of this nonsense and that would have made it only 25 games to go in the regular season once they went back home.
