See, to me, this is on the safe side of the line for two reasons:

1) You pointed out to my satisfaction that you weren't trying to cast actual homosexuality as bad. (i.e., making the distinction then implying that whatever "bad gay" is, actual gayness isn't bad)

2) Audience. You weren't trying to ruin someone's day by counting on them to take "gay" as a pejorative, but (presumably, since I never read the original comment) busting your friend's balls and trusting (appropriately, given all I know about LARS) that they knew you weren't trying to smack down gay people. LARS' gay readers presumably know your personal sense of humor, and the group's collective one, well enough to take it as intended, and to fire back as appropriate, and everyone trusts that no one is gonna get hurt. Totally different context from when we're saying "Gay!" to Chivas players hoping it'll piss them off and make them lose.

Plus: Sacha surely expects the gay chant by now. We should be able to get something new that will surprise him and that he won't be able to tune out. There are some sadistic fucks here, many of whom are really funny, and I bet we can do better :)

its easy, we'll just try and convince him that the confederation cup loss is his fault

I can't speak for Tommy, (well, sometimes when he's sleeping I can..... ;) ), I don't know if anyone actually came up to him and said, (I am so offended by that cheer...), but I for one, am offended.

There's your answer for anyone curious about the root of Tommy's epiphany.

1) I don't care because I don't attend matches anymore.

2) What about when Tommy wears his priest get up? Isn't that mocking and offensive to some?

3) I'm playing devils advocate

GAY

–adjective

1. having or showing a merry, lively mood: gay spirits; gay music.
2. bright or showy: gay colors; gay ornaments.
3. given to or abounding in social or other pleasures: a gay social season.
4. licentious; dissipated; wanton: The baron is a gay old rogue with an eye for the ladies.
5. homosexual.
6. of, indicating, or supporting homosexual interests or issues: a gay organization.

–noun 7. a homosexual person, esp. a male.

–adverb 8. in a gay manner.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Origin:
1275–1325; 1950–55 for def. 5; ME gai < OF < Gmc; cf. OHG gāhi fast, sudden

Related forms:

gayness, noun

Synonyms:

1. gleeful, jovial, glad, joyous, happy, cheerful, sprightly, blithe, airy, light-hearted; vivacious, frolicsome, sportive, hilarious. Gay, jolly, joyful, merry describe a happy or light-hearted mood. Gay suggests a lightness of heart or liveliness of mood that is openly manifested: when hearts were young and gay. Jolly indicates a good-humored, natural, expansive gaiety of mood or disposition: a jolly crowd at a party. Joyful suggests gladness, happiness, rejoicing: joyful over the good news. Merry is often interchangeable with gay: a merry disposition; a merry party; it suggests, even more than the latter, convivial animated enjoyment.

2. brilliant.

FTR I'm not in favor of 'gay' chants.

.5) Tally had nothing to do with this. She was surprised by my posting as anyone else.

1) That's a more prescient point.

2) I haven't in two years, but you wouldn't know that because you don't live in LA. Also, that doesn't cross the line and you know it.

3) It's all you do these days.

Yes, the line between comedy and tragedy is a thin, blurred one. Why do Tijuana whores go down quicker than others? What do Mexicans think that answer is? Is "We are Scott, you are Lacey" funny? Why? The steers and queers chant is obviously also gone the way of the Sacha chant now.

Is a priest outfit worn in reverence, derision, satire, etc? I have a religion and the outfit never bothered me, because I knew Tommy was not being hateful about it, just like I know queer and gay chants aren't hateful, just like I know there is no difference between a Tijuana whore and a whore from anywhere else, etc. I mean shit, to some people, just calling yourself a Reverend when you aren't is offensive. I think it's funny, but if we REALLY are removing context, then....

There are two ways to look at this (my turn to list things):

1) Obviously people in LARS don't like it, and if you do knowingly do something that people don't like anyways, it's borderline being a dick.

2) Lighten the F up, because once you begin to impose a PC mentality on LARS, LARS will be different than it was before, because:

a) No more religious references of any kind (priest outfit, Mormon chants at RSL, etc etc). The same EXACT arguments made here apply to those.
b) No more "who's your father" or "a rope a tree" because why is being a bastard bad? It's a slur, who cares if he actually is one or not... and lynchings, well, we are fully aware how ugly that is. Funny? Lynchings?

That's just off the top of my head.

This keeps coming up, and it seems some people think some things are comedy and other things tragedy, and they want to impose their own distinctions of those on the Riot Squad. That's fine, but not everybody has the same ones.

I've been taught since I first wandered into this that, short of racism, the Riot Squad WILL be offensive at some point, and you're either in or out, and the mob will decide which chant gets airtime and which one doesn't. It was a take it or leave it option, and that's great. So yeah, make fun of people's religions, make fun of their parentage, etc etc. It's all in fun.

Now it seems we're trying to cherrypick which offensive things we do and which ones we don't. Some people want to be able to go "STOP SAYING THE WORD "GAY"!!! and then turn around and go HA HA HA MORMONS HA HA HA.

So, we gotta decide:

1) Don't be a dick
2) Lighten the F up

I should add, no way would I now yell this knowing that some people get very upset about it. I don't wanna be a dick.

But I would encourage them to lighten up.

There's also a large contingent of LARS who are Chivas de Guadalajara fans, and "I Hate Chivas" songs are offensive to some of them.

So are you being a dick if you sing anything anti Chivas?

Is it sporting to take your lumps when you lose and exalt in winning when you do?

Is it sporting to say U R GAY?

Want to know what I find offensive:

"LA GALAXY the world's greatest soccer team"

"The best team in America is the LA Galaxy"

My response, I don't sing them.

A few thoughts:

1) We need more chants we are repetative. For all the musicians in LARS you would think we could come up with something original.

2) For Sasha I think the chant was great and IMO it is not offensive (although I'm not gay but my friend who are think it's funny.) Offense is found in personal opinion and although there are many things that a clear majority can find offensive I think that this does automatically merit condemnation more so than any of our other chants.

3) How about:
Sasha lost the gold
Sasha lost the gold
hi ho a dery oh
Sasha lost the gold

Unless of course that would offend farmers.

Hell ya. That's way better. It's important to note this should be the new Sacha chant (with the new sign!) not because of arbitrary and hypocritical concern over what is "allowed" in LARS, but because it's just awesome. Well done Andric, we can make fun of Mormons and fatherless children with a clean conscience.

TO SOME the rev outfit crosses the line! TO SOME the 'gay' thing crosses the line and to some it doesn't.

3) It's all I've ever done.
