As posted previously - started a new job and I sit next to an NYCFC fan.

Came into the office this morning and I asked him "did you catch the final yesterday?"

And he responds "which final?"

Haha!  Perhaps it was just a little Lite humor to start the day!  ;)

Nope, he thought I was talking about NCAA football.... and then had like an "ohhh yeah" reaction when I mentioned MLS Cup.

I dunno, I acknowledge that the league needs to first attract fans like this in order to later nurture them into legit supporters, but it just feels wrong.

Meh, I don't think that's just a MLS problem, and I wouldn't necessarily call it wrong either. For a lot of (US) sports fans, the season's over the second their team is out of contention, with only a casual or no interest in the remaining games.

I have to say, I DVR'd the final but decided to watch some Redzone instead and am probably unlikely to watch the final in full. RB losing so recently definitely contributed to my not wanting to see it. It was the same last year, while I watched a lot more playoff games in prior years after being eliminated earlier.

I watched it and fell asleep at half time.

The last two Cup Finals have been shitty games, this year takes the cake though. Three goals that were gift wrapped by the ref or a keeper, it'd be nice to see the supposed two best teams in the league actually earn their goals.

I shit you not, i took a nap and missed the entire 1st half -- caught it about 48th minute on.

I think this qualifies as teamwork.  Good job, 'cane!

Plus two posts, a crossbar, a handball and one sit on the ball.

I will take this game over last years snooze fest.

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

Wish Adi had scored that goal, so the final could have a legitimate highlight to be remembered by (instead of LineGate). But I can't complain about the result or even the entertainment value, even if both teams played pretty poorly all around.

It was a fun, ugly mess of a game for neutrals, and an absolute shitstorm for Columbus. Our stagnation in the semis wasn't that easy to take, but it would have hurt like hell to be on the losing end of that one. Can only imagine how many times we'd all be saying "That's So Metro" if Robles were to pull a Steve Clark 30 seconds into MLS Cup.

Sure, this is true for many fans.

But I'd argue that *most* STHs of any NFL, NBA or MLB team would watch the ultimate game of the whole season even if their team didn't make it. Most of us will probably watch the super bowl this year (including me, even though I hate the NFL) - add to this, the context that as MLS fans you're probably painfully aware of the fact our TV ratings are pretty shit and most MLS teams operate in the red and therefore you feel obliged to support the league wherever possible...

I dunno.

The NFL isn't far to compare because they are the beasts of ratings, gambling, fantasy, and interest in this country. People will still watch two horrible teams on Monday Night Football for no other reason than they have office pools, fantasy games and money on the line. The NFL is in a league of its own right now. Even the NFL Draft, which is just college players getting drafted has become a 3 day prime time event that garners higher ratings than the playoffs in the other major sports.

I think we need to compare MLS more to MLB, NHL and the NBA. In those leagues it's fair to say (especially in baseball and hockey) that most fans stop caring once their teams are out of it. Even the NBA hopes for big market teams to make the finals. The Superbowl is basically matchup proof, the entire country will watch regardless of who is in the game. As for me, it was hard to watch MLS Cup because my team just got elimated the week before and it hurt to watch. I flipped here and there between NFL and MLS Cup but only to see what was going on. I still  think going head to head on Sundays with the NFL is not the best idea when you're trying to increase ratings and interest. This is opening a whole other discussion with the schedule and FIFA calendar but I'd prefer more of a yearlong schedule with a winter break (like Bundesliga).

As much as it hurt to lose to Columbus in the ECF, I will still take that pain than the pain of hosting the final and having a new generation of "That's So Metro" hanging over this team the way Columbus lost to Portland...

Not me.  I'd prefer to get to the final.  If we were victimized by fluke goals, bad calls, etc., it certainly be another "That's so Metro" moment, but that would be no surprise, in the Great Scheme of things.  Perhaps even expected, considering that we had a similar down-the-lie ball in 2008, that turned into a Crew goal. (It did remain in, but IIRC some players thought it was out & stopped running).

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.
