It's being reported that DC is buying keeper David Ochoa from RSL.
Curious move, for a few reasons. First of all, doesn't DC already have a starting keeper, and a club legend at that? Is Hamid hurt, or declining? Is this a move for the future, where they feel that Hamid only has one or two more seasons left as a starter?
Ochoa's contract is up at the end of this season, so DC must have paid very little for him. The report I read said that the fee would go up if they can sign Ochoa to an extension. Maybe Rooney feels he can persuade the kid to sign a contract to stay in DC.
Ochoa got hurt in preseason, lost the #1 spot at RSL to Zac MacMath, and has been banished from the first team. He's either training with Real Monarchs or back at home in California. The club has been tightlipped about exactly what's going on, but it's not too big a stretch to imagine some disciplinary issues here. Ochoa's likely not happy and is just playing out his contract, and I can't imagine him being any happier at DC, sitting behind Hamid.
On top of all this, it's been reported that several big clubs were looking at him (Man U, Monaco, Barca and Club America). If that's true, I'd think he would have very little interest in staying at DC after his contract expires.
Ochoa has looked really good at times, but seems a little immature. He's young, it'll be interesting to see where his career goes from here. Does he raise his game and become a legitimate first team keeper and maybe Mexican national teamer, or does he flame out and end up in USL in a few years?
