Stoke fans are gathering at the airport (COVID protocols being followed) to welcome him back.

This is the line that should have given it away.

If we lose Duncan I would like to have Edwards back, actually playing as a right back. If we retain Duncan then he is pricey for a backup RB / utility player, who we hopefully wouldnt need playing CB next season.

Exactly.  No way anyone in Stoke is following protocol.

Perhaps Stoke will loan us DWP instead,
if he remains stuck on the bench:

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Is he rumored to return? Didn't see it from the article, just that he was injured for two months and Red Bulls want him back.

Stoke signed their backup right back to a new 18 month contract.  There starter's contract runs until the summer.  If they can tie down Smith, there may be an opening to get back Edwards (article mentions our interest).  But if this did happen its something i would imagine that drags into Feb/March.

Didn't Edwards pick up an injury as well?

Well and hes injured, so wed be starting the season with Nealis and nothing behind him, especially considering the non depth at the position with the 2s. So thats something to be considered when it comes to Edwards.

yeah pre injury i would have wanted edwards back if possible. with injury im not sure anymore especially because he has less time to fight for his place there so it may take longer to convince him to move on. dont want to wait until april to have two right backs (unless there is some position conversion we dont know of).

Would be good to have him back once he's back from injury.

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

Hopefully its on the shorter end of the timeline, although certainly dont want to rush him back.
