So the United States has  over 24 million Americans playing soccer (out of 325 million americans) and the country has not been able to produce players like Mandzukic, perisic, rakitic or Modric.

Keep in mind that Croatia only has 4 million people in the country but has had a much greater success rate.

this data just shows what is wrong with american soccer.

the coaching sucks, there aren't enough good academies, and the kids play to win/earn a college scholarship.

RIP Guillermo Romulo, Alexander Francis Orig and Celenio Eleazar.

RIP Cesar Castello, Mike Vallo, and Glenn Stampiglia

47 played for AUS MNT, 3 for Croatia!

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Keano is my all time soccer hero, even moreso than Eric the King. "You shut your fucking mouth you!!!" Making Viera piss himself in the tunnel.

lol

but imagine if the united states could just improve its youth development system to the point that 4 out of 4 million people who play soccer in the United States can be as good as rakitic or modric.  If that was to happen the US would have the best team in the World. That would be at least 24 world class; elite soccer players.

soccer development in this country is pathetic.

Besides pay to play the big problem is that the best athletes all play basketball, gridball or baseball. As people think twice about getting involved in gridball and see that soccer can be a very lucrative career path that is likely to change.

2. Its actually harder when you have a larger country.

2. Does any country have a 4 world class players in 4 million success rate, over the long term? Maybe Germany...

This is somewhat over-stated.   The body types that succeed in basketball or "gridball" aren't the same as what works in soccer.    The world is full of 6' 10" guys but none make it as elite soccer players.    And baseball is dying as a young person's sport.
