Kanchelskis signed for Manchester United in a £650,000 deal on 26 March 1991, with United manager Alex Ferguson describing it as a "justifiable risk".[8] Ferguson had discovered Kanchelskis through a VHS tape sent to him by Norwegian agent Rune Hauge,[9] who would later be caught up in the bungs scandal, and had been able to personally scout him during a Soviet Union match against Scotland.[10] At the time, Kanchelskis was a rarity in English football, being one of just 11 non-English and Irish players in the First Division of English football.[9]

in ... 1991 ... Kanchelskis was ... one of just 11 non-English and Irish players in the First Division of English football.
Lithuanian dad, Ukrainian mom, born in Ukraine, played for neither, instead USSR, CIS & Russia.
Yet people thinking switching nationalities is new.
We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

is this a random (interesting) factoid?
It was split from another thread.
Probably should have gone to the NMR subforum,
but that itself seems to have disappeared.
