What specifically about the "handling" of the Petke firing bothers people so much? A lot of people's hating of Ali seems to be how he was fired.

Petke is a team legend that really connected with a fan base that has long felt ignored by an ownership that always put their brand over the team's history or connection to it's base. The team felt like it was finally starting to bridge this gap under Petke with the banners last year and so forth. Both seasons under Petke were successful.

Then they fired him.

I don't think he's confused as to why the firing upset fans, but there are so many people now saying that they're unhappy with "the way it happened". The announcement was very abrupt, but was there any way that Ali could have gone about it that actually would have placated fans?

I understand there's a group of people that are mad "because" they fired Petke, but there's others that are mad at "how" they fired Mike.

It sucks that it even happened. Most of us feel like he earned the right to coach here and it sucks because Jesse has been fantastic.

I didn't like that Petke was fired, and I didn't like how it happened either.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

I think both Marsch and Curtis are doing a great job. I didn't fully support them to start the year. I still had some doubts only a few weeks ago. But I'm on the bus now. I've seen enough to believe we're in good hands. There will be more bumps along the way but they've shown the ability to recognize those bumps and game plan for them. We'd be hard pressed to find another duo that gives us a good chance at hardware.

That being said I thought firing Petke was completely irrational and unwarranted. You don't fire winning coaches while they are at the helm of a team that is still winning. You don't fire them when they share your same vision of rebuilding the club. At the very LEAST you let them start the season and then you go from there.

Ali Curtis never said why he fired Petke. I wish he just had the balls to say he fired him because he didn't like him, or they just disagreed on vision of the club. Then it was also the way he fired Petke. Petke was ready to work in a small market low budget setting as well. He thought he was on board with Curtis. Then Curtis has come off as a smug asshole in the town hall meeting. Curtis may be a very good GM and potentially an MLS genius but he is still a Smug asshole. For that he will never get my respect.

It's not that confusing to understand?

Maybe sucks is the wrong word, perhaps unfortunate? Some people probably don't know how to feel still because we're doing good but it's with someone other than Petke coaching the team. Petke was the best coach we've ever had and he got canned. Cannot argue, he had the most success and therefore he was the best. A new GM came in, fired him but never said why (just that he was not the right fit) and hired his boy. His boy is doing well, and we (most) of us are pretty happy, but there's always a part of me (probably all of us) that wonders if we'd be in the same position with Petke at the helm. Maybe, maybe not. I know I'd be thrilled if we were doing this well with Petke at the helm. It just sucks because we'll never know how he would of done, but we all know he did enough to deserve the chance.

Ali handled the firing badly.

I don't see why he couldn't just asked Petke to quit and paid him off.

Or Ali could of tried to hook him up with an MLS job

Why would Petke quit? I guess they could have done a Marsch-Montreal thing and mutually agree to part ways. And Petke is getting paid, he's still under contract.

There is no way to handle it well I think. The guys a legend so canning him is going to get the die hard fans riled up. No way around that.

If I recall correctly, it was the last min nature of it. He was strung along until the last possible minute and then canned. I think he also might have been specific assurances that did not happen. At the time, it wasn't just a normal parting of ways or being fired, it came across as Petke being misled.

Marsch was hired three weeks before players reported for training camp.
