the germany x mexico match was straight out off a hollywood script. it was one of the best games i've seen at any level. There were beautiful goals, late drama, and a bicycle kick winner.

...ooooh ooooooooh we are the riot squad...

If any of you young whippersnappers want to know what it was like being a USA soccer fan in the 80s and early 90s. Wait a few years(months maybe). We are headed back in time pronto if the recent performances of the younger Mexico teams and US teams mean anything. Qualifying for WC 2014 is starting to look more and more challenging. Look at what the U-22 Costa Ricans are doing in Copa America. This is very concerning and needs prompt and urgent intervention.

The U.S will not qualify for 2014 and MLS will fold later that year. Good day.

I'll be afraid when the US gets knocked out of a World Cup after losing to Mexico 2-0.

I'm scared shitless of Sunil Gulati, Bob Bradley and Ghana. Not Mexico.

I hate to say it but I think (future CONCACAF President) Justino Compean has done a good job with the Federation.

Financially, Mexican football is a juggernaut (I read somewhere that it was 1 of the top 3 money makers for FIFA -- the other two England and Brazil) and while fans are constantly complaining that all this capitalist success is at the expense of the game, 2 U-17 titles in 6 years speaks well of the work being done at the junior level.

I don't think the U.S. has to worry about anything other than developing its own program; on the flip side, I think that the US' growth has had a positive impact on Mexico. It's forced Mexico to grow from being the team that's content on picking on the banana republics in the region (and those gringos and canadian gringos "that don't even like soccer") into a team that's competitive, aggressive, has an attitude, a certain je ne sais FUA and isn't intimidated by going down in the scoreline.

ps. I'm pretty sure of three things right now:

1. Mexico has a good crop of raw talent for at least a decade -- what's done with them is a different story,
2. Unless the US can pry the 2022 WC from Qatar, Mexico WILL host a World Cup in 2026, and
3. A Mexican will be the next president of CONCACAF.

I am happy to see Mexico finally responding to the United States challenge. We'll see if they can sustain it. If the US begins to struggle to qualify for the WC at every level and gets hammered by multiple goals against Mexico, perhaps we will see changes to the system. Maybe the best thing that could happen would be for the US to fail to qualify for the next WC. Unfortunately, I don't think the players will let that happen. I'm still trying to figure out why Dempsey came out in support of Bradley. Hopefully it is a classic public vote of confidence before the hammer falls.
