Veron gets a chance every day in practice...  Take Muyl for example.  How did he basically get the job over Sam?  Busted his ass in practice and eventually got a few minutes in games.  Then made plays in those games which actually turned into goals.

Veron has been banged up so that certainly hurt him.  Marsch said he basically expects a bigger role this year but I think it's a good thing that Marsch doesn't hand out a starting spot to anyone who doesn't show they deserve it in practice.  Sends the right message to the team and probably part of the reason this team is so good.

And everyone who plays on this team says how serious they take practices under Marsch so it's not like you can't compare those practices and games.

Makes sense. It's too bad you don't win playoff games in practice. Grella was "sharp in training" a lot down the stretch according to Marsch and that amounted to not much on the pitch. Obviously, I'm not at training so I guess if guys are dogging it I get them not seeing minutes. I would just like to see more skill out there and if that came at the expense of a little work rate, so be it.

Grella has produced in past.  Has Veron every did anything to warrant playing time other than last 2 to 3 minutes of  a game?

Does Veron ever play more than the last 2-3 minutes of games?

Maybe we can convince MLS to let us count some of Grella's Summer of '15 in next year's playoffs. Who cares what Grella did. He's been unproductive in the playoffs. Sacha at least has the excuse that Montreal had 2+ guys in his most of the time. And while BWP missed his opportunities, at least he had them.

Why has Grella been such a target of yours for a lack of offensive production while you never mention Muyl?

His pre-season alone justified more playing time than he got.

Problem there was most of his preseason success came from a formation that wastes our best player.  And he was injured for quite a while after preseason.

He's going to get his chance this year.  THey wouldn't be keeping him otherwise.   If the guy can stay healthy and improve he'l make a difference.

Just call it a hunch but I don't think he'll be doing anything significant.  Hope I'm wrong.

1.  Muyl is higher on the depth chart.  When Royer was healthy, Royer & Muyl were the starting wingers.  Grella is the player directly blocking Veron from more minutes.

2. Muyl is a lot younger than Grella.  I'm ok with playing Academy & RB2 guys even if they struggle to start.

3. Muyl brings defensive and work rate.  So while I prefer offensive players to be more... offensive, I get that he can help shut down a Piatti.

4. If you check out the "Right back is an eyesore" thread there's a lot of me arguing for Muyl to play right back.

Wouldn't shock me at all if you're right.  Just give him a real chance.  Or move him and get another DP.  I don't think we can win anything with Grella as the third or fourth best offensive player getting minutes.

Biggest thing Veron has to have is some luck.  He's gotta luck out with the injuries.   He improved this year without a doubt in my opinion.  I think his natural inclination coming in was to not work as hard defensively and wait for the ball to come to him.  By the end of this year he was definitely working.  The other thing is that I truly think he does have good defensive instincts and abilities.  For whatever reason (maybe because of his speed and longer legs) but defenders can't anticipate how fast he can close them down.  He does force turnovers because of it.  He just has to have more plays that result in goals whether it be him scoring or him making the significant pass.

We can all see the dude has the skills to become a real good player.

Another bigger factor is who Curtis and Marsch bring in from the outside. It's clear they want someone.   That will impact minutes for everyone.

And what I did like in the playoffs is that when we needed a goal, we didn't switch to the 4-2-2-2.  We switched to a 4-1-3-2.  That very much suits this team I think when we are against teams sitting back or we are just in need of a goal.  It doesn't change the passing lanes too much and Sacha gets to stay in his best spot.   If we bring back Collin and Dax is at his best destroying, that is something we can flip flop to and really make it work.

veron has a place here. in the offseason press conf, they said so. we have 34 lg games next yr, at least 6 CCL games, at least 1-2 USOC games, and at least 2 playoff games. we dump a guy who we will most likely need and won't need a preseason to adapt to a new team?

and you wanna dump a guy, who in limited minutes in the playoffs, looked pretty good? pfffffffft.

We heard this same stuff last year. Lots of games and need players to play them. Then Veron barely made an impact and got limited minutes, still.

I'm hoping they leave Veron unprotected in the expansion draft. Either that or fire Marsch and hire a coach that will play Veron, but you can't have a DP sitting on the bench like he does. You have to do something.

No one is picking him up in the expansion, protected or not.  It would be foolish to protect him.

I'm okay with keeping him, but your rational for keeping him only applies to non-DP players.  Coaches are supposed to treat everyone the same regardless of what they make, but fans do not.  I expect anyone we paid $2 million for with a top 5 salary on team to start a lot and not to be a rotational player.

I hope this year he earns his way into that role, if not, in 2018 I'll drive him to the Newark Airport.

To me, Veron is an X-factor. He can do great things with the ball, but doesn't score. His play can be inspired, but the playmakers don't seem to have an understanding with him.
All the flash is nice, but unless and until it results in goals, wins & trophies, it's just flash in the pan.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.
