#1346217 Warren Lee, ESC, RIP

Posted by jamison on 19 May 2019 - 02:52 PM

Warren was a great guy, a kind friend and always a great conversation. From 16A & the old 101, to Kettle of Fish & USA games, I always shared a laugh whenever we talked. He had a great ability to see through BS, and care only for the things that mattered. I always admired his frankness, and every time I ran into him I was glad that I did.

He is sorely missed. RIP old friend.

#1346150 What is the front office doing?

Also, they have operating losses (maybe, with TV, Adidas & what not it is possible they aren't losing all that much). They have actual profits from selling players and paper profits from owning an appreciating asset in the team as well. So, it's a question of how you want to move the money around, but I don't  give a shit about the team crying poverty.  Current expansion fee is $150m; RB was credited as paying $25m for the team and $75m plus for the share of the stadium back in '06, and then bought the rest of AEG out & built the joint. But still, the value of the franchise was $250m as of last year (per Forbes), and the team has operating losses of $3m/year.  Leaving the stadium out of it, just going from $25m to $150m based on the expansion fee, that's 41 years of losses covered by the asset appreciation.

Leipzig got a $10m or so player in Tyler Adams for $3m, and even the 33% of his sell on that RBNY gets one day if he's sold is a free 66% going to the master account back in Salzburg and another 33% going to us, which is also going back to Salzburg at the end of the day.

So, Tyler saved them 2.5 seasons worth of losses (if not more than that) in a reduced transfer fee. They have enough money to fund the youth academy properly if they wanted to. There has been talk about them expanding it. I hope this current run is just a bunch of bad luck & bad management, that can be sorted out soon by getting the proper people.

We have (had) a great academy. Don't fucking blow this.

New Jersey is like a Saudi Arabian oilfield of youth players. Not every one will develop, but plenty have.  The quality is sitting there. We have the system to bring them literally from middle school to the Bundesliga.

Shame on us if we waste this advantage.

Whether it is this game or the next one- Id like to start Omir again. Feel like he & Kaku could have some fun if they got some chemistry going. Away at FCD is fine- try to win the home game then going out to Texas & roll some dice.

#1344917 Thierry Henry linked to RB coaching role

Posted by jamison on 23 April 2019 - 07:04 PM

Can we please stop the Woly talk??  I mean this guy has ZERO MLS coaching experience.  Im not saying he is worse than Armas, but damn if were trying to win a title we need championship pedigree.  Coaching or player.

Mike Petke had zero head coaching experience, and his MLS coaching experience was one year sitting next to the immortal Hans Backe, which is hardly a strong resume. He won a shield in his first year. So, I'm not Woly's agent, I'm just saying he gives an actual shit about this team, knows the system, and has had success as a head coach.  Many of our head coaches have lacked one or more of those traits.

If they can get someone amazing instead, fine, get that guy. If they can't, I'd take Woly over TH14- who has shown zero coaching success anywhere.

I don't want a guy to be our head coach who doesn't have a track record of success as a head coach (ideally at MLS or higher level). Much as I love Titi, I think the jury is still out on his managerial skills. He's very motivational. Has tremendous skills. But we've seen a lot of guys who were great players not really succeed as managers, and I'm putting Klinsi in this bucket as well. I have a feeling he expects a ton from his players, but doesn't understand why they can't perform at his level. We saw that from him as a player. Not sure what went on with him at Monaco, but it didn't last long, which doesn't bode well.

Not against Titi one day, just think that Woly has earned that shot. Or, someone of a higher caliber. I don't need to fall in love with the name of the coach, I just want the most talented guy we can get.

#1342777 Possible naming rights to RBA

Posted by jamison on 14 March 2019 - 05:35 PM

Mind you, this is the same organization- a soda company that owns a soccer team- that had its GM leave for a rival beverage company, and then brought that guy back citing his numerous wonderful personal qualities, including his loyalty. Which, I would have thought was somewhat in question when a person leaves one organization for its competitor, but, maybe that word doesn't mean what I think it means.

I don't really give a shit what they call the stadium. The brand of the team was already pimped out to sell a product, the stadium name is pretty light stuff compared to that. As long as the name isn't obviously sexist/racist/named after Ben Olsen, etc., I don't really care. Use the money to invest in the academy, new players on the field, fine.  MLS has already seen "Dick's Sporting Good" park, so, hard to imagine anything worse than playing "at the Dick".

Can we cheer on the players while simultaneously booing management? How would that work?

See Section 101, circa 2003-2009, Giants Stadium.

Only two of us would read it, but I feel like there's an unwritten book out there that would cover the MSG-RedBulls yearly *completely never discussed, ever* contract renewal deadline brinksmanship deathwatch that renews every spring like some bizarre 1,000 mile salmon migration.

Like...every year our season starts on March 3rd or whatever and February 28th dudes are sitting around a table going "well....I just don't know...."

No one has ever heard of a 2 year contract? No one can ever get this deal done before the end of February? Rangers are trading half their players away and Knicks season has been over since November...da fuq else is MSG going to do from May on? So strange.

900k/yr? Damn, thats a hell of a raise.

For Media Day, we need Dan to ask him what the first thing he blew his money on.

That is not The Post. That is Wheel of Fortune!

The newspaper industry is collapsing. Re-write, editors and headline writers seem to have vanished.

Well, no one is perfect. I realized the best mullet version of that headline was "RedBulls take care of Business Up Front, sign Long in Back." and just refer to the mullet, instead of saying it.

Sigh.

#1340753 Aaron Long Contract Extension

Posted by jamison on 18 February 2019 - 04:14 PM

How did the Post not go with Aaron Long Term Contract? Not even 'Red Bulls take care of Business Up Front, sign Mullet in back'? They've fallen far from Headless Body in Topless Bar.

Anyway, awesome on a few fronts. First, I'm glad he got paid, he deserved it. Second, I'm glad we now have him & Parker locked up for a while. They'll either be here long term, or we'll get money if they are sold, either way, better news than them walking at the end of their contract. Finally, it's another reminder to potential youth signings than our pipeline of Academy-USL-First Team works; even though Long didn't come from the academy, he got into our USL setup & blossomed from there, took that to the first team and got paid. Love that.

Also, he has enough money to go to a fancy place and get a Eurotrash Mullet, instead of just a regular old American one, but hopefully he keeps it local.
