#1442427 Do we have a forward?

100%. XG is one of the most misunderstood stats. You cant just look at the total, its too simple.

Of all stats you can just toss out there in a vacuum I think xG is one of the better ones. I've almost never seen an xG stat for a striker's finishing and been like "holy shit no way", it usually aligns with the eye test over the course of a decent number of games.

only reason i dont view Serge as an ironclad squad player is because he is coming back from a major injury.

Serge fell into the unfortunate "Caden Clark" trap of scoring a few goals in his first few games as a pro without really any other pro-level qualities. Hype train launches out of the station without having any way of knowing what kind of player we have. And now with the extended injury layoff, that's even more true.

The fact that we are hoping/thinking a 15yr old wins the starting job tells you all you need to know about our offseason

To be fair elf beats this drum every off season, that some teenager from the academy will be next years hero

I'm somewhat convinced you could take a million PKs a million different ways, and the end result would confirm that across the board they are what advanced statistical models would call a "total crapshoot".

#1442121 Julian de Guzman named Sporting Director

Posted by iced1776 on 03 February 2024 - 10:19 AM

I was kinda under the impression this role doesn't actually wield that much responsibility, no? Kinda like Hamlett just floating around the last few years, doing mostly behind-the-scenes work, maybe getting involved in the draft picks, academy signings, etc... I don't think de Guzman is the guy we're hiring to arrange Forsberg-level transfers, I assumed that was still Schneider's wheelhouse.

Kinda falls in the same bucket as assistant coaches - people whose job performance I have absolutely no way of measuring as a fan

I feel like this is deja vu with Doyle. He starts of every offseason suggesting that this is the year the Red Bulls finally spend big. Then about half way through the offseason he switches his tone to "I don't think they'll make anymore big signings, but they'd be contenders if they did".

#1441980 What place will Metro wind up in 2024?

Posted by iced1776 on 31 January 2024 - 12:36 PM

Will depend 100% on luck with injuries if this is more or less the squad we're rolling with. If Vanzeir, Morgan, and Forsberg can all play 2500+ min, I think we have a solid shot at top 3 in the East. Any issues with those three, I think we slide back down towards where we finished last year. Serious problems with those three, I think we miss the playoffs because I think our attacking depth is worse than last year.

Everyone has a different bar for de Grandpre's comment about investing more. Personally I hope it means we enter the 2024 season with all three DP spots filled. Use the most important roster resource given to MLS teams.

Flipping Luquinhas for Forsberg was a great move, but not one in a vacuum I think lives up the hype de Grandpre got rolling with his quote. Especially if the remaining moves are all depth pieces. Need one more guy this window who will impact the starting lineup immediately to get me excited about being contenders again.

Our biggest signing of the winter was done weeks before camp even started, which as you guys have mentioned is pretty unlike us. Ideal world we'd have a full roster done by now but I don't think that's realistic for any teams.

Just saying January 26/27 isn't the time to be hitting the panic button that the off season is over yet

Ah, late January, that time of year when fans assume we're done making signings when inevitably there are more signings in February and March. It's like clockwork, possibly down to the day

Amaya, Edelman and Stroud are each good to very good, but there is definitely room for an upgrade to at least one of them if we want to be a championship team and not just a playoff team.   6's are incredibly important difference makers.

For sure, but I think the gap between a potential DP and the current 9's and 10's is much larger than at the 6 spot.

Right now, depending on the formation, we're looking at Manoel as a starting striker or Harper/children as a starting AM/winger. For my money, I trust Amaya/Edelman/Stroud more than I trust Manoel/Harper/children.

I know only like a dozen people watched those preseason streams but I enjoyed em, disappointed that most MLS teams have gone all cloaks and shadows with it

Mainz article was interesting but that was awhile back.

Boring truth of the matter is we won't know until week 1 unless they decide to stream preseason games (please please please) or someone goes to the games and reports back.

Won't lie I'm a tiny bit concerned at the distinction between a transfer and a signing. Tough to fill a DP spot without a transfer and it would be a major disappointment to enter the season with a DP spot unfilled.
