Actually, taxes of 1.4% ($35.5k/$2.5M) would be lower than many NJ towns, where they run 2% or greater.

The assessed value of a home has nothing to do with the sale price of a home.  And $35,500 is really high taxes for anyone who doesn't travel by private jet.

It's Upper Saddle River, folks there pay their tax bills with whatever they can shake out of the sofas.

Median household income is $180,000. Holy shit.

I work in USR, some nice real estate around here....but yikes on the taxes. Even if the median household income is 180K, it would be really tough to swing 35K on taxes, on top of mortgage. I guess that's why i live across the NY border in OC.

Apple: While I agree that there is a difference between purchase price & assessed value, the fact is that many towns assess their properties as low as possible, and refuse to re-assess, to reduce property taxes, most of which go to the school system or the county, because the budgets of most towns are small.  So, two entities that have nothing to do with assessment, need it the most.  JPA's house is in fact assessed at $1.6M, but he paid $2.9M for it in 2007, and it has never been fully assessed.
