I brought my 9 year-old son to his first Fire game Saturday. We had a great time at the tailgate -- he bonded with Don Kraft's kids playing Pokemon -- and had a generally fabulous time. A little bird had told me something to the effect that there would be a rather large flaring going on. My last words to the this person were, "Be careful, don't hurt yourself or anyone else."
The flares were awesome and I totally respect the Ultras that pull this off. I had warned my son that there would be flares and things might get smokey and showed him how to use the scarf. We also sat in the second row from the front towards the west side of section 118. However, some nitwit *threw one down there and missed him by just inches and scorched the crap out of his brand new Section 8 shirt. Kind of freaked him out a bit. A higher or lower and it would have pegged him in the head or square in the back or landed on the little six year-old girl in front of us.
The front of the section is well populated with the youngest, future Section 8-ers.
If you have the stones to bring 'em in and light 'em off then you also need to have the stones to make sure you don't hurt yourself or anyone else, EVEN IF THIS MEANS YOU WILL BE BUSTED FOR SURE. At the end of the day, you are lighting off objects that contain their own oxidizer and burn at a more than a thousand degrees. Anything they come into contact with is going to burn or be burned. Badly.
Keep the pyro back among the grown ups and don't EVER throw a lit flare. I love it and respect it, but if you do it you have to at least have the minimum level of maturity to make sure you are ensuring the safety of yourself and others around you. If anyone ever gets seriously hurt, whoever get's caught will be looking at more than a night in the pokey and a fine. I love some of you too much to see your lives ruined by something as trivial as this.
Besides, it would be a betrayal of everything that Section 8 has worked for over the years. It will make past conflicts with the club and Monterey seem like a paradise. So, all I'm asking for is this: If you can handle the security heat for bringing 'em in then you are surely big enough to make sure you don't hurt anyone, even if it means you have to take one for the team. If you can't do that, then you can't handle them, okay?
I'm now going to go donate for this week's tifo and if everything goes right will be bringing my eight year-old to her first Fire game this weekend.
Edit: Bah! Subtitle too long.

It only takes one fucktard to ruin it for the people who fight for Section 8 and the rest of the supporters in Toyota Park.
Sorry your kid had to go through that.
