Torsten Frings anyone??? We outplayed Germany in the quarters of the 2002 WC and even the German coach admitted it should have been a red card and pk. Oh well...
I think the thing that surprises me the most about this whole thing is that people take such decisive opinions on this like it's never happened before. This type of shit has always happened, and will always happen, no matter what changes you make to the game. You can never, ever completely eliminate human error from the referee's perspective, whether it is realtime or on a review of a play.
Part of that was the confusion (as there always is) about the interpretation of the rule.
My opinion on that one is that the wording at the time had more to do with "intent" and/or "gaining advantage"...which, intentionally leaving your arm in a position to block the ball from crossing the line certainly qualifies, in both instances...
(the rule is currently worded more to address "natural position" and crap like that...so as to take the burden of interpretation away from the referee...not that that makes any sense either.)

The player getting away with it was French and the victims were Irish. Can you write a better formula for causing such outrage??

"YOU GOTTA HAND IT TO GALLAS..."
"If you are first you are first. If you are second you are nothing."
"I don't approve of your methods."
"Yeah, well... you're not from Chicago."

Martin Hansson has refused to shoulder the blame for allowing William Gallas's goal to stand for France
"I realise that it was not my fault," he told Swedish newspaper Sydostran. "It was an unfortunate event that had big consequences for Ireland, but it wasn't the fault of the refereeing team."
You are a referee, it is YOUR JOB to see that! How in fucking hell is that not your fault!?

AMEN!Here's the real disgrace:
You are a referee, it is YOUR JOB to see that! How in fucking hell is that not your fault!?
this is EXACTLY why players have such disdain for referees. Most are absolutely incapable of admitting their mistakes.
