def seems like I'm misunderstanding! Can you help explain it to me?

I know the history. I respect the sentiments about the RB purchase. But I don't see the logic behind clinging to metro as a name besides nostalgia purposes. My intent isn't to upset anyone, it's to just understand. I think it's cool to pay homage to our old name and break out the old shirts.... but not something to jump down somone's throat over.

Oh, and chants where you say "metro" instead of red bull just confuses the shit out of first timers at the stadium... I've popped lots of MLS cherries this season and had to explain it every time. That has nothing to do with anything, don't respond to that like Im saying not to chant 'metro'.. I think it's cool myself. But with 101 being the only place we see reference to metros anywhere, it's not a clear picture for newbs...

cuz (most) of the people who say metro have that air of "well we've been around longer than you have" and thumb their noses and look down upon at people who support the current regime. they play victim that "their" team was "taken away" and that an evil corporation is out to get them. i'm not saying EVERYONE, but many, close to most, who feel like that. and there's definitely pressure to "fit in."

there's even a small number of people who are so militant, they've gone on record saying "i don't support red bull, i support [the supporters club]. that's the only reason i come to games."
{GSS}
"So wait, a brace is when someone scores 2 goals." "Yep." "...and a hat trick is 3 goals." "Right." "So than what's 5 goals? Is there a name for that?" "A Mathis."

There are also those that play victim that they get "mocked" for Red Bull apologists. In all honesty, I have no problem with the Metro only or the Red Bull only folks. The whole name thing was never as big a deal to me as it has been for others. Probably because I haven't been in the stands since the beginning. I only became a regular in 101 in 2006.

"Obviously, I want to make a living (in soccer), to say the least," he said. "There's so much you can accomplish in the soccer world, and right now I'm focused on having a good season with the Red Bulls. Ultimately, our goal is to win the MLS Cup, and I see no reason why we can't." - #4 Tyler Adams

I think it's a fine thing to pay homage to the original name. But those of us without any personal attachment to the 'metro' name shouldn't be crucified when we don't have the same reverence for the name as you do.

If someone wants to express their desire to keep the metro spirit alive, then they should do so with an inclusive spirit. Not one that excludes and divides. And expectations should do better at matching reality when it comes to new fans being indoctrinated. I find the situation interesting and I respect all the supporters who've hung through it all... but most of us new comers just want to get behind some entertaining hometown football and don't have a vested interest in what the team's name once was.

And here's a statement I know I'll be ridiculed for, but here it is anyway: we're talking about a franchise that was only founded in 1995. The league has changed drastically in this time. drastically. re-branding, rule changes, ownership changes.. these are just growing pains for an infant league. It's not the same thing as Manchester United or the Yankees changing their name after 100 years of history. I don't mean that to be snide, just expressing the POV that many might have who haven't been around as long as some of you.

Change the name of your 'club' to something that represents the community it plays in.

yeah, like the MetroMedia Stars! oh wait.....

Maybe something cool like the 'The Lazers!!!!' (the name should def officially include those exclamation marks)

Oh yeah, and the Wizards, that'd be a cool name too!

Honor your past, accept the present, embrace the future. Learn how to support club football you lemming.

Side note: The people who make fun of Metro need to realize that they're only making fun of themselves. Same club.

Secondary side note: STAY ON TOPIC. DO NOT LET THIS GET DRAGGED DOWN INTO A NAME DEBATE AGAIN.

I should be able to make one little jab of a comment without a) someone being a sally and getting on a high horse about how to support the history of MetroMedia and b) without the thread being hijacked into retardation.

I think all the names are equally lame at this point. I don't think there's anyway for us to change to a name that wouldn't be lame.. NJFC? come on.... I don't have any problem with the metro name, I sing it, I respect the past. but I poke fun in response to those who don't respect the CURRENT name only to hark back to "history" of a "club" formed in the 90's and named after a media company...

and sometimes it's fun to WUM it up with those you know are sensitive sallies. don't feed the trolls.
