On Sunday, Eric Alexander set a new club record with 42 appearances in one season.

Board whipping-boy, but he's now a team record holder.

His play has picked up significantly since he was put in his correct position as a Center mid.

He actually set it in the return leg vs DC. Old record was 40 (Valencia, 2000).

In fact, in his two years here, Alexander has missed only one game (regular season / playoffs / open cup / concacaf): the meaningless CCL game vs Montreal.

Jack of all trades, master of none. Totally solid when played in position, painful to watch when out of position. The kind of solid, dependable Anerican mid- range player this league is built on, that we have a habit of throwing out for the next shiny European that comes along.

If Bover could learn to play defense he could be dangerous in Alexander's spot, but he won't, so leave Eric there & try to fill other holes for next year.

Best 8 we've had in a long time.

Makes me wonder if Marquez would have been more successful here if we played a 4-2-3-1. He would have been a nightmare for opposing teams if we paired him with a Dax-like player and a 10. Instead we tried forcing him into covering way too much ground.

The Backe years really were a tactical nightmare. Dudes out of position all over the place, personnel that didn't fit a 4-4-2 (which is a horribly outdated formation), and more crosses than Vatican City.

Is there any in this rout with authority to treat with me? Or indeed with wit to understand me?

word.  He's the Logan Pause, Ned Grabavoy, brian carroll etc.. type of player that usually every MLS team has in their starting 11 at CM.

my only concern is if the Dax- Alexander starting  CM pairing talented enough to take us to that next championship level in a 4-2-3-1?  We saw what a next level CM in one of the same positions ( Jones) did to us.  It'll be great if one of those spots were taken by a player of slightly higher pedigree.

???? We are 1 game from the final with Dax Alexander. Jones was good but I think we held our own and had 1 breakdown after Alexander was taken out.

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

Dax and ALexander as a combo is more than enough to win a championship.  I'm more concerned about who will fill Peguy's role in the midfield as he is slowing down and can't be relied on forever

The elite DM's in the league, guys like Alonso and Beckerman, can do what Dax and Alexander are doing by themselves, but this is MLS and you don't have elite guys in every spot under the salary cap. Petke's found a way to make the position work with the talent he has, if we don't win the championship it would be tough to point to the center of the midfield as the reason why.

He played a pretty good game today. Our MF shut down NE for the most part, just had 1-2 bad plays that cost us. Over the series, Nguyen was not the factor he could have been, and Alexander gets a lot of the credit for that.

This role playing alongside Dax is clearly the best role for him. The not so expensive, versatile, American player are necessities in this league and he fits that bill.

He did pretty well in 2013 playing mainly wide right. This year he did struggle playing wide left but his second half of the year playing in the middle was very good. It's good that he can be versatile and fill in here and there when needed but playing alongside Dax in the middle is where he is best and where he should stay.
