#1364198 MLS, Red Bulls and Coronavirus

Posted by MTF on 26 March 2020 - 05:29 PM

2005 was a lockout. Different thing.

They haven't even started the playoffs yet this year. I think it would be a hard sell for the league to scrap this season and tell fans that everything they invested themselves into since October was just a bait and switch.

A bait and switch?! LMAO! Its about protecting your players from injury and illness, and protecting your fans and employees from a resurgence of the virus. If a fan feels a professional sports league pulled a bait and switch on them, well, that is just their problem.

Hopefully there is a conflict between the Yanks and NYCFC because that would mean there is a baseball season. With the way this is going and the build up needed to get players ready, have to wonder if baseball happens in 2020.

I think there will be MLS and MLB seasons, even if not before July 1. Personally, I think the NBA and NHL are done. Not sure you can bring players back for playoffs if they havent played competitively for months. Recipe for injury.

God, we need soccer back! The political posts have grown old real fast. I miss Milo randomly throwing out the names of every 18-25 year old male in the Southern Hemisphere.

Have you seen attendance at RBA? We good.

#1362406 Davis named captain

Posted by MTF on 27 February 2020 - 04:05 PM

Good for him! Nice to see a local kid get the armband.

If Im Aaron Long, who has been captaining the US National Team...... and RB wont make me the captain, nor will they let me go to the Premirship......Im probably not thrilled.

Maybe Aaron Long thinks it's a great choice. Who knows? I do know that we in the peanut gallery have no idea what the deal is inside the locker room.

#1362107 Hamlett is in so far over his head

Posted by MTF on 24 February 2020 - 04:15 PM

He's been missing since his hiring was announced.

Even if he hasn't started yet, he could still delegate Hamlett to get some business done before the season starts.

Bottom line is between Thelwell/Hamlett, the club has slacked this month and needs to be held accountable.

People on these pages make it seem like running a 'real' club is no different from playing fantasy football. "Get some business done." None of us knows what's been going on behind the scenes. Who knows who we've tried to 'do business' with who's turned us down? Just because Milo, and now 'Euro Milo,' speculatively throw names around by the dozens doesn't mean these are players just waiting by the phone for Hamlett's or Thelwell's call. Give Thelwell six months.

A more active summer?

You mean kicking the can down the road and making more excuses for a lack of impact signings?

The fan base should expect Thelwell to make adjustments immediately. And he's failed to do so thus far. Has he even showed up at Red Bull Arena yet?

If this guy is so smart, it shouldn't take him months to realize the roster is lacking.

Has Thelwell even started yet? Initial reporting said end of the month.

#1361149 Sean Davis is 26 years old

Posted by MTF on 09 February 2020 - 06:56 PM

Wow... thinking about Davis being 27...  gotta assume he'd be light years better at this point if he didn't waste 4 years development in college.   I still think he has upside, and last year was a step in the wrong direction for him, almost certainly due to Armas.    He came along right at the turning point, before guys like Miazga blazed the trail (not that Miazga was likely choosing between MLS and Duke).  I have this unlikely scenario in my head where he steps up and turns into our Jordan Henderson.

He may have wasted four years of development in college, but lets face it, he was never going to be Pirlo or De Bruyne. Hes a professional soccer player who will have a 10 year career in MLS. Earning a degree from Duke seems like the smarter play in my opinion. I bet he makes more money in his lifetime with that than he ever does in football. Who knows?

I think reversing the colors would have been perfect.

#1360686 Hamlett gets a new boss: Kevin Thelwell, Head of Sport

Posted by MTF on 03 February 2020 - 11:58 AM

Idk hard to tell but seems they're just happy hes off...

Only 1/2 good lucks.

Seems they were pissed at his lack of activity in Jan window, so probably just spoiled fans. He must have done a decent job but again the Mendes links brought them most of their good players, so idk. My overall happiness is bc hamlett is so useless id take about anyone else and working in the PL must have good links in the game.

I thought I was reading Metro supporters on that Twitter feed!

#1360482 Kemar sold

Posted by MTF on 31 January 2020 - 09:31 AM

Kemar is going to play in Belgium, not the Premier League. If he were being sold to a Prem club we would've seen a $3-4 million fee. He will be missed, but it's time. He doesn't want to stay and the club is honoring his wishes. He's had his contract ripped up and his pay increased several times. He's upset about the money given to Long and Parker and again wanted a new contract. He has a right to be angry with Red Bull, but maybe he should direct some of that anger to his agent, who probably didn't get out of Red Bull all he could have (or at least with Long and Parker's agents were able to get). Had he not had a below average (for Taxi) season in 2019, he would've had a better case.

They need to be the first MLS team dropping 25 million on a player if need be..

I think you meant to post this on the LAFC or Atlanta boards. You have an active imagination.

Spend money on offense get a 20 million dollar big name CF and a couple of top quality wingers and have Royer and Kaku split time as CAM or just use a new formation all together that gets as many as the best the roster has on the pitch at the same time working cohesively

Red Bull will never spend anything close to $20 million! The era of big money signings (Henry, Marquez, Cahill) is long gone, and even then wasn't remotely close to $20MM. Silly to even suggest this is in the realm of possibility. This club will be looking at <$2 million signings that they can hopefully develop and sell for $3-$7 million. You will see more Jorgensens and no Chicharitos.

What would spending now do for them that wasn't accomplished by spending back then? There is no financial incentive to winning an MLS Cup. I don't think the league generates enough broadcast revenue for the team to say "you know what, let me drop an extra $10M on transfer fees so that I can win MLS Cup", because at the end of the day - they will just be out those $10M.

And there's not guarantee that by spending that money you will actually win desired Cup. Sports are funny that way.

Could the league step in down the road and try to pressure Red Bull to sell on the basis of integrity?

It hasn't gotten to this point yet, but if Red Bull is only interested in fielding a non-competitive USL team as RBNY (for development's sake), it would give other clubs essentially free wins. It wouldn't be fair then with the scheduling to allow eastern teams to get more points off of RBNY's scrubs as opposed to Western teams.

I can't think of any other scenario in the U.S. where a team in a top league is operating as a farm team for an unaffiliated club. It's not even this bad between Man City and NYCFC.

For the spirit of competition it's going to become a problem fast.

This is non-sensical. For all the complaining about Red Bulls spending (and thats what it is), youre talking about a team that has made the playoffs the last 10 years straight and been the best regular season team three times in the past seven years. We havent won MLS Cup. I get it...but this is just a very silly comment. Giving free wins?  Non-competitive? SMH
