There was a time when this sort of announcement would have automatically coincided with us in clear position to win our first Shield

It should be awarded, even if TFC or the Worms.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Presumably the actual reason is the fact that there will be Western conference teams who will not play their full schedule, but there has to be language about "no fans in the stands" etc etc to avoid making it look like they're calling this season a joke (which it is).

Just my 2 cents.

If you scan YouTube looking for Bradley Wright-Phillips, youll find numerous goal compilations, a few interviews and, eventually, an excerpt from the grime mixtape series Lord of the Mics.

Exactly this. I'm one of the Shield board members. We had language about that in the statement MLS asked us to take it out and then proceeded to throw us under the bus. For the record, I didn't want it taken out, but was overruled.

Then reply to MLS with that language.
I still disagree with not awarding the Shield.
Put an asterisk on it, if you want.

2001 season, all teams did not play equal number of games.

Shield was awarded.

Lets be fair- This is more a MLS public relations business response than the Supporters Groups being a cohesive unit on the release.

PPG would have been a relatively easy solve for this. I get the unbalanced schedule aspect, but until MLS finally plays every team home and away (which can't happen with the number of teams now unless Pro/Rel is introduced), there will always be an unbalanced schedule.

When MLS reaches 34 or 36 teams, there can be a single round robin!

I really don't like this decision, everyone knows this whole year of sports is a weird one, sure it's not ideal but it is what it is. We have seen 3x just how much that shield means to our players so it's a shame whoever finishes first is going to miss out on that experience. Whatever team that finishes first fans are going to say they won the shield anyway.

I think it's silly how they act high and mighty about the season being so unbalanced and the no fans in the stand comment is pretty lame as well. There was like 100 of us in Chicago when we won our second shield, the third shield the damn thing wasn't even in the building and they had to celebrate with a stupid plastic toy captain America shield.

I really think the shield should have a double for situations like that, the money could easily be raised considering how many teams and supporters groups there are in this league now.

Isnt the Supporters Shield an award from the collective Supporter Groups of each of the MLS Teams? There is no financial award giving to the winner from MLS, right? So what is it to the league if there is still a Supporters Shield Team awarded? I would understand the US Open Cup and MLS Cup winners, even the Mickey Mouse Tournament held in Orlando. Each have monetary award associated with said winner. Just put an asterisk to this seasons Supporter Shield winner! What is the big deal?

No, MLS does reward the winner.

As in previous seasons, this team will be the top seed in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, earn a berth in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League and receive the bonus that goes to the club that finishes first overall in the regular season standings.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss the reasoning behind the decision with some ESCers on Zoom.
There is no doubt that the MLS schedule creates a flawed championship. I can see your point, although because I value the Shield over MLS Cup, I still think it should be awarded, with an asterisk.

Toronto FC coach Greg Vanney didn't mince words on Sunday when addressing the decision against presenting the Supporters' Shield this season.

"My players are [expletive]. It is a huge sign of disrespect to the players," Vanney told TSN. "It has arguably been the most difficult season in the history of our league where people have put their health at risk to play and put games on television for fans. This season required a huge commitment from all the teams -- people were genuinely afraid for their health.

"It's a disgraceful decision that delegitimizes the whole idea of the Shield in our opinion. Those who made the decision are like kids in a park who take the ball away when the game isn't going their way. It's childish and a symbol that they don't know how sports operates."

Vanney not a huge fan of the decision lol

Dear Mr. Vanney,

The playoffs delegitimize the shield every year.

Sincerely,
Koko
