#1368602 MLS has tentative plan to continue 2020 season

Posted by Rybka on 03 August 2020 - 12:40 PM

Attendance has been going down in all sports for many years prior to Covid. The possibilities (not listed in any order) are high ticket prices, high parking fees, high price of concessions, great TVs for watching at home, able to watch on tablets or phones when out of the home, construction and traffic delays getting to and from the arena by car or public transportation, delays getting out of the parking lot, and worry about safety (drunken fans, crime, terrorism). Now put Covid into the mix, and it becomes very unlikely that things will turn around anytime soon.

With all due respect to the great BWP, Diego Rossi did 75%+ of the work. He stole the ball, he advanced the ball, he crossed the ball, and set up BWP. BWP did an excellent finish, but the fact is that we don't have anyone who can do what Diego Rossi did on that play.

#1366564 Can we bring some real talent here?

Posted by Rybka on 10 July 2020 - 06:09 PM

4 ways to get a better team:

1. go out and buy players better than what we have

2. develop young players that we have in our pipeline

3. improve current players with better coaching

4. have more intelligent management and organization than other teams

In our situation,

#1 is out of the question

#2 has been constantly above average

#3 is not noticeably better under Armas

#4 should be a lot better once Thelwell gets settled in

Other factors:

#1 Our best players often want to go to Europe, but we use the proceeds for general purposes, not to buy talent.

#2 Most of our sources of income are poor- tv, attendance. However, transfer fees are ok.

#3 Our salary expense is near the league bottom.

Some have suggested that the pandemic will be stopped by hot weather. Well, it was 101 degrees in Phoenix Arizona yesterday and they are seeing a resurgence. So much for that theory.

Rocco Commisso Stadium converted to field hospital:

I thought it is an outdoor stadium. Perhaps they put a dome over the artificial turf in the cold weather and use it for the football team's winter training.

Stop the bickering, instead let's use our computers to fight the disease:

With the new travel restrictions in effect, we should call him "Jason Pending".

Maybe one day the "The de Grandpre Tarps" will become as well-known as the "La Brea Tar Pits".

#1361107 Some people discuss gentrification

Posted by Rybka on 08 February 2020 - 09:19 AM

Gentrified neighborhoods in Brooklyn (and New Jersey, Queens and perhaps the South Bronx) are a result of these areas being close to the economic hub of Manhattan. Some people think it is good that the economic hub is expanding because it brings in tax money and employment. Others who have been or will be pushed out of their neighborhood are unhappy. Obviously this is the Amazon HQ debate.

But keeping Amazon out is not going to stop gentrification. The areas surrounding Manhattan will keep getting gentrified by the people who have high paying jobs in the expanding Manhattan economic hub. It is amazing to me that so many big businesses, including all the sports leagues, want to be in Manhattan or close by. This is in spite of the very high NYC and NYS income taxes.

After winning for the last 5 years, BWP will not be defending the Brian Kelly Memorial Preseason Scoring Trophy. I wonder who will win it this year.
