This game has been officiated perfectly thus far.
I thought there should of been a yellow given to South Africa earlier in the half on a poor tackle, but otherwise I agree.

Holy crap, the ESPN announcer doesn't understand the offside rule!
That's hilarious! As bad as any announcing ever.
Exactly. Fire Efan Ekoku. A WC color commentator should at least understand the offside rule, and be able to know that 1 defender is less than 2 defenders.

A player is in an offside position if he is in his opponents' half of the field and is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the next to last opponent.
The 2005 edition of the Laws of the Game included a new International Football Association Board decision that stated being "nearer to an opponent's goal line" meant that "any part of his head, body or feet is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent (the last opponent typically being the goalkeeper). The arms are not included in this definition."
Notice that's "typically" the keeper, not "always." Bad goalkeeping paid off in this instance, because the keeper played Vela offside.

Thanks Metros 11 and Matrim55 for the info....I never knew. I guess because you don't see the Goalie as the second to last defender all that often.

It's rare, but I bet Bouna gives us another crack at explaining this rule before the year is over! Thanks Metros 11 and Matrim55 for the info....I never knew. I guess because you don't see the Goalie as the second to last defender all that often.
Anyway, the ESPN guy should be fired. It's amazing that a professional could get that wrong.
FWIW, the ESPN.com guys on their gamecast got the call correct.

Yes, but the MLS ref will keep his flag down.

"It was always six weeks away. Every month, [Nick Sakiewicz] would say, we're six weeks away from the stadium. It's been the longest six weeks of my life." - Mike Petke

Maybe not fired, but you'd figure someone in that studio would know the rule and correct him. It's rare, but I bet Bouna gives us another crack at explaining this rule before the year is over!

BTW, anyone watching on ESPN 3 lose audio as well?
