Some people can't stop arguing, who did trading Dax open a spot for? (It's very important!)

If I sell my beater car for $50k then I most definitely sold it for good value, even if I piss the money away after the fact.

In Dax's case you sold your quite good car for a few more years, not exactly for money, but for points towards another car purchase. Then these points didn't really turn out worth as much as you thought and ultimately you ended up not using them at all. You then proceeded driving far inferior beater car that was left in your in your garage for years to come.

You're forgetting that we already had a Ferrari in the garage with Tyler Adams taking over Dax's spot!

Unfortunately fans have zero visibility into how clubs actually use allocation money. We had some expensive players come in for 2017 (Collin re-signed, Gulbrandsen, Keita) that could have easily taken a chunk of that $400k for Dax. It all comes down to the same point that we all agree on - the scouting during the last 3-4 years was hot garbage.

Borats is fixated on Davis replacing Dax.  He doesn't believe that, although Davis got first crack, Marsch knew what he had in Adams, even though Adams was training regularly with the first team.

Davis ended up starting (with Adams) very next year, and years since. We just would be better with both Dax starting and Davis on the bench. Even for the time when Adams was starting too, and years since. The fixation is the disappointment of us losing good players and then ending up playing inferior ones which would otherwise be on the bench, hence making both starting line-up and bench better. Instead we keep losing good ones, ultimately ending up with inferior talent we have now.

The Ferrari was a part of a larger car fleet. You ended up riding both a Ferrari and that inferior car a lot though. Could have had a fleet of two nice cars instead, not one good and one subpar. Then lost Ferrari for nothing again, and just had the beater.

Bad analogy.
My friend owns one, puts about 500 miles on it annually.
Doesnt even drive it half the year.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

You're ignoring 2017.  Marsch clearly favored Felipe over Dax (he pushed out Ali Curtis to trade Dax instead of Felipe).  If they kept Dax, he would have eventually been a bench player that year, as Adams was clearly better AND Marsch liked Felipe.  This idea that Dax would have been ok riding pine until Felipe got traded the next year, is laughable.  Plus, in 2018, Davis was fine in 2018 - he had a better whoscored rating than Dax that year.

But this was Marsch we were talking about, he coached the team like he was driving on the Autobahn, he wasn't leaving a Ferrari in the garage.

But, that is indeed where it is most of the time.

Ignoring 2017? I don't think so. Davis ended up as a starter alongside Felipe and Adams, which is what Dax would do as well. Maybe we don't lose in play-offs then? Yeah, I guess he was fine next to Adams in 2018, wonder how good Dax would be with him. And with Davis bolstering the bench. Or the following year when Davis was bad again. Not a good deal, and that's not even in hindsight, but especially so.

When Felipe, Adams, & Davis were all starting, Felipe was the lone deep CM, Adams a wingback, and Davis a wide mid. That was at the end of the season, after our CB situation wasnt working out. They didnt go into the season planning to play that formation, it was out of necessity.

There were a lot of games before that where Felipe & Adams played as a deep CM tandem. Those are the guys that Dax probably would have been on the bench. He was not as good as Adams at that point. You can argue about Felipe, and Id probably agree Dax was better, but its been pretty well established that Marsch preferred the Brazilian.

When you have more talent, you have more options, out of necessity, injuries, or whatever else. This was the most pivotal game of 2017 season. With Dax instead of Davis as a starter, and Davis on the bench we would have had a much better chance to concede one less or score one more and advance than with Davis as a starter and no quality midfielder on the bench. There was a place for an upgrade in starting line up over Davis and upgrade of the bench too. When you have more talent, you have better options. When you get rid of talent for nothing back, there are fewer good options. If you keep doing this, you ultimately end up where we are just now.
