#1366308 "MLS is Back" Tournament Begins 7/8

So we now have a group with 6 teams and group with 3 teams. This tournament will go swimmingly.

Maybe the Orlando Pride can replace them

#1366283 Can we bring some real talent here?

Austin FC, who don't start play until 2021, just signed a player for $2.75 million

RBA can have a reduced capacity of 5,000 by removing the tarps & covering 80% of the seats. Admit only STHs. Then, RBNY can legitimately announce capacity crowds.

It's "So Metro" ™ that social distancing became a thing the same year that terrace seating was finally installed in the South Ward.

In depth article on the tournament but, for some reason, the thing that stood out most for me was the prohibition on ball kissing.

Probably JCO just tried to get out of family trip lol

Imagine having to drag your kids around Disney in August! I know I would be looking for ways to get out of that nightmare

With hard times already upon us, the last thing MLS needs to do is cancel the season.
If no soccer is played this year, there would be at least a 17-month gap between games. Many fans may have turned their attention elsewhere, and might not return.
A difference between the league & the players of 1% is probably $3-4 million. Surely MLS can absorb that.
I can see why the players oppose attendance clauses.
Look at the way RB posts its BS numbers.
Other teams could easily do the same.
Even legit numbers could be manipulated.

About $150K per team. The owners can easily afford that. They are just hoping that the player's union blinks. Would you give up most of your yearly salary for an extra 1% giveback? For many players, that would be $1,500 or less.

Japan is testing a "remote cheerer" app. Hopefully it has a YSA button.

I'm always aware it is actually fake, especially when the camera shows empty seats.

Just pretend it's a July Wednesday afternoon game at RBA

Five sub rule change and (maybe) no VAR

https://www.yahoo.co...-131517359.html

Here’s a look at the temporary changes to Rule 3, which has now come into place:

  • A maximum of five substitutes are allowed per team, per game
  • To avoid disruption, each team will have a maximum of three opportunities to make subs during the game and also at half time
  • If both teams make a sub at the same time, this will count as one of the three opportunities for each team
  • Unused subs and opportunities are carried forward into extra time in cup competitions
  • Where competition rules allows it, teams will be allowed an extra sub in extra time. The sub can be made before extra time starts or at half time of extra time

If the pandemic drags on into late summer or fall, they should consider this:

There's 26 MLS teams. Make a World Cup style tourney with the group stages at neutral locations TBD

LAFC bye for group stage (SS winner)

SEA bye for group stage (MLS Cup winner)

6 groups of 4 teams each.  Should take no more than 2 weeks. (Sat/Sun - Wed/Thurs - Sat/Sun).

Top team in each group advances (6 teams)

2nd place team in each group advances (6 teams)

Top two 3rd place teams advance (2 teams) - will play either LAFC or SEA in opening round

Then do a world cup style playoff. single elimination knockout at the higher ranked team's site (based on total # of points from group stage, then goal differential, goals for, etc.).

Make the playoffs on Sat/Sun. Total of 4 rounds would take 4 weeks.  Can do the whole shortened season in 6 weeks.

Toughest part IMO would be finding neutral sites for the group stages. You'd want smaller sites that are geared towards soccer (i.e. not a random NFL or college football stadium that would never fill up). But you also don't want to give any one team an unfair advantage (i.e. RBNY playing at RBA)

Biggest problem I see with that is that you are asking LAFC and Seattle to play an elimination game after not having played since the first week in March against a team that has just finished playing 6 games.

NPR website has modeling on the projected peak in each state. Of places with MLS teams, DC already peaked on April 4th, New York's peak is supposed to be today, NJ is April 12th, but Texas, Minnesota and Utah aren't supposed to peak until 2-1/2 weeks from now. If those are truly the peaks, then it would be at least 2 or 3 weeks after that before they should even think about restarting training. Oh, and for you NYCFC fans, the peak in Connecticut is on April 22nd
