#1444714 Emil Forsberg lack of synergy

Posted by elf on Yesterday, 11:14 AM in MetroFanatic.com

Henry's issues was because of covid restrictions though because it made traveling to see his kids and coming back impossible because Montreal was playing most of their games in the US.

It's still similar issues. He has team commitments and communication between work hours in two different continents is a huge challenge. I doubt he had any time to visit his family considering all the traveling he did since he came here.

Hopefully, things can be fixed.

This
So if he gets 3 goals and 17 assists and Morgan gets 17 goals and 3 assists
We are in great shape
I think he will start getting on target soon though

But he is no academy kid or mid salary player.

He is the DP player. He needs to score.

Elf and ivo - the guys just had his best game ever for metro... just be happy. The team won 4-0 and he assisted on every goal.

I have very recently really doubted Vanziers pace and stamina, but he looked great out there on Saturday. That is him "turning it around".

Poking holes in his performance is really negative. The guy had an amazing game. He could have added a goal to his 4 assists, sure. But a Vanzier that is playing like he did on Saturday is a DP. Add those two goals, and consistently over the season, and you are talking MLS MVP over Messi. Thats not a reasonable requirement for me.

I am not being negative. I am being realistic. I dont want folks to think that having a performance like that against one of the worst defenses in the league solved our problems.

Remove morgan from this team and we are in big trouble.

Hopefully, he can help fix some of these things while he is in Europe. The time difference can be a challenge if your trying to communicate and have a relationship with someone in Europe.

Henry talked about it when he managed Montreal and his family was in France. its a big sacrifice that the family has to make. Eventually, Henry left the managerial job.

The team's xG was 1.23, they scored 4 non-Vanzeir goals, but he also "should have had a hat-trick?"

Like...come on man. Be serious.

XG is not perfect as it does measure defensive coverage well. It is a statistic that measures the probability of scoring from a particular area and not a useful stat when you look at 1 game since the sample size is small.

Vanzier and Morgan had wide open looks against Miami, and at a minimum, a professional soccer player should be able to hit the frame with no pressure. Morgan did more than that and scored. Vanzier had two very clear scoring chances where the only thing in front of him was the goalkeeper and the net. He needs to be able to convert those shots. I am confident that if it were Morgan or any other competent MLS forward, they would have either forced the goalkeeper to make a save or scored. In another scoring opportunity, Vanzier passed to Morgan, who scored.

The Miami game was not about Vanzier's assists but about Morgan's finishing.

On those assists, Vanzier played the logical pass. Morgan was wide open. Those scoring opportunities were happening last year and earlier this year but our forwards struggled to get the shot on goal. In fact, look at Vanzier's shots during this game. He had wide open looks and probably should have had a hattrick but missed the net. When we play legit teams, that cannot happen.

Kudos to Sandro Schwartz for recognizing that we do not have a forward and decided to play Morgan, our best finisher, in that position.

Haji Wright playing with confidence compared to how he played in the World Cup

Reyna made two nice passes to feed him.

It is ironic that Reyna saved Berhalter from all the haters by playing amazing in OT.

I would love this signing.

But my big hope is Radamel Falcao García.

His contract is up to in June. He's said he doesn't want to play in Colombia. I think Metro can swoop in and sign him. He'd be the striker we haven't had in NY since BWP

I wonder if he would be ok with a trial and if he is willing to play in a press system.

Meara or Marcucci?

Although Meara is the better GK, i would say you have to play Marcucci to see if he can play at the MLS level.

#1444282 Is Vanzeir a bust?

Posted by elf on 19 March 2024 - 12:53 PM in MetroFanatic.com

The player has to put the ball in the net, but they're not going to very often if they aren't on the receiving end of good chances (or if they don't know how to generate those chances themselves).

Vanzeir, for example, didn't just forget how to shoot once he got here. His shots on target percentage was about half what it was in Belgium...and so was his xG/shot.

If the team generates better chances, all of a sudden, Vanzeir's going to look like a better shooter.

I dont think we can compare belgium vanzier to red bull vanzier. He looks like a different player. Injuries and fitness issues have plagued him since he arrived and when he is "healthy" he looks slow and has played poorly.

In comparison, look at morgan. He looks totally out of shape since he came back from injury but you see the talent and can still produce even if he is not fit.

This is a "both" situation. BWP was a way better striker than anyone we've had since, but go back and watch his highlights. Buckets of tap-ins, 1v1s, open shots in the box... Marsch, unlike Struber, actually drilled the team on how to pass the ball once they got it. Struber made Klimala run to the corner flag and then told him to just figure something out himself from there. I think Klimala had one tap-in from a quality cross in his entire time here.

Vanzeir wouldn't have score 20+ goals for Marsch. BWP wouldn't have scored 20+ goals for Struber/Lesesne. BWP and Marsch were that combo of generational striker and elite coach that you need to get a golden boot winner.

Please stop it. We were all here to see klimala miss open shots. The coach can only do soo much but the player has to put it in the net. He struggled here and he struggled in Israel and will struggle at any decent league because he is not good.

Same thing goes for vanzier. He has not been able to get shots on frame. It's not a tactics issue. It is a technique issue. At this point, I would tell him not to worry about scoring; focus on your sot %.

That is an oversimplification, Struber pressed harder than any Red Bull coach and that system was a nightmare for strikers. Struber and Klimala themselves were on record several times that the way they played made it difficult for strikers to score.

20+ goals obviously isn't impossible but I think it'll continue to be an anomaly in MLS. You need a generational talent on an elite team that prioritizes setting up their forward for tap-ins. I'm higher on Vanzeir than most, but he's not a generational talent. We're better this year than last, but we're not elite (yet). Schwarz finally has us playing with the ball again, but we're still not creating a high volume of simple chances. I don't think a 20+ goal season is in the cards for our strikers even if the season overall ends up going well.

Marsch implemented a very direct pressing system similar to Struber's, which proved successful. The pressing system creates easier scoring opportunities, but it requires players who can shoot accurately and convert those chances.

It wasn't Struber or  lesesne system that caused a scoring issue. it is a talent issue.  we currently lack forwards who are efficient shooters.

Since BWP's last season, all our forwards, except White, have struggled with their accuracy and scoring efficiency.

Halftime. Pretty dominant half, especially on the attacking side.

O'Connor reminds me a lot of Sean Nealis.

Sofo has speed and skill. Lacks size but has a good enough touch to make up for it.

Mina definitely a more deliberate attacking wingback. Built like Olave. A bit reckless at times.

I like sofo. I hope he is given a chance with the first team.

Posted by elf on 18 March 2024 - 04:54 AM in MetroFanatic.com

No one in MLS does that, much less someone in this system that is mediocre at creating regular high-quality scoring chances.

Bouanga and the Greek guy in Atlanta tied for the league lead in non-pen goals last season with 17. Asking for 24 from any one player is unrealistic - last time anyone did was 2019, when Vela and Zlatan both hit that mark.

I dont think it is unrealistic. The press system is supposed to inflate the stats of the forwards because their are so many transition moments. If we had a competent forward, he would be close to BWP's stats. BWP got close to 20 goals or went over 20 goals regularly.

We havent had an efficient forward in such a long time. He doesnt need to be at the level of zlatan, vela or bounga. He just needs to be efficient with his scoring opportunities.

I would say MLS for the us open cup fiasco if we dont have a clear bum

It could be the reoccurring bum for the rest of the season

#1443932 Is Vanzeir a bust?

I think I've made this comparison before, but he reminds me of Kenny Cooper, who was another striker who only did good things in the box but very much liked to drift away from the box.

We need someone to keep barking at Dante all game to get to the box like Thierry did for Kenny.

Cooper had the body too be a target striker but played like a wing

Vanzier is not a winger since he has no speed and he is not a striker since he cant finish.

#1443784 Is Vanzeir a bust?

Posted by elf on 04 March 2024 - 09:33 PM in MetroFanatic.com

A lot is made of Vanzeir's partner, but I think the issue is more in how our coaches are using him. Struber wouldn't know how to get Cristiano Ronaldo to score goals, Lesesne let him roam free in the midfield, and now Schwarz has him making more runs to the corner flag or playing him as a right winger.

There have been almost no patterns of play since Vanzeir's arrival that include him making a run into the box at the same time that someone is looking to play him in. It makes it really hard to judge him as a player because this is supposed to be what he excels at, and he's not even being put in a position to try.

It can't get much worse for Vanzeir than the first 15 minutes of the second half against Houston in that RW spot. Some clips here of him and Edelman coughing it up time after time, mostly Vanzeir.

If the game plan will continue to ask him to play mostly in the open field, then swapping him for another DP this summer might be the best move for everyone. But then again, that scares me because I was confident they'd flip Luqui and here we are with an open DP spot. I feel like selling him over the summer just means we end 2024 with two open DP spots.

the simple answer is that he is not a DP. the guy we saw in clips is not the same guy that is playing with RBNY.

what we need in the midfield position is a speedy goal scorer. he is not speedy or a goal scorer. i think Harper fits better with what the team needs. Maybe the new Scandinavian kid ends up winning the job.

if they could sell him this summer, they should do it.

Miami is up to no good. they just traded yedlin to cincy for 172k GAM.

from this trade they have 172k GAM + 683k cap space to improve the squad.
