15,000 ... in the building would look pretty good.

I would take a full lower level, with no camera angles showing the upper deck.
Lots of empty midfield seats are bad optics.
Much like all the empty seats behind home plate on most Mets & Yankees broadcasts.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

First timers who don't know where to park and take forever to get in and out of the area and never come back is what I think hurts our attendance more than anything else. Look at any big game that isn't the red bulls held at RBA and you see numerous complaints about traffic and parking from first timers, happens all the time.

Good point!

I can't imagine it being very different for a first timer at, say, Yankee Stadium.   Ever try driving and parking there?

First timers are no where near as critical for the Yankees as they are for the Red Bulls...just sayin'...

An obvious way to help with the exit traffic and attendance is to have a RB2 game or SkyBlue game after. Or some foreign friendly. The "double header" was used in early MLS to boost attendance.

Immediately after! 20-30 minutes.
I have sat around and watched the crowd get bored and dwindle away during the hour+ wait for the second match.

You were expecting Rafa to be the draw, when we had Henry?

As mentioned, not THE draw, but definitely one of them. Just kinda proof for me that stars and ethnic pandering specifically don't really work.

Of course, over the years you'd see fans come out to support players (still fondly remember the mini Ghanain block that would come out to support grandpa doe. And even if they didn't fill the stadium you'd still see a fair few Rafa jerseys and way more Henry ones (I shudder to think what attendance would have been like without them), it just never really seemed sustained.

But as we're discussing and becomes apparent every time we have one of these threads, there are tons of interlocking reasons why attendance isn't what it could or should be, often regardless of who we're signing or how we're playing.

I may be wrong (and I am sure some wise ass will tell me immediately on here haha), but I think we picked up Rafa first for his supposed  on field contribution. The hoped for  attendance boost was a secondary, not  primary reason. That neither occurred was just one more rendition of that old canard "That's So Metro".

Any first timer getting frustrated with the drive to Yankee Stadium will soon forget about it after they get violently ill eating the food inside.

Apparently, many prefer to focus on something peripheral, such as traffic problems, rather than the fun of watching the best team in the league, in the best stadium with great atmosphere.

I'm not a baseball fan but I think we have a way higher percentage of people in NJ who drive than people at Yankee games who drive. Obviously NJ has public transportation options but for a family of 4 on NJ transit it can be way more expensive for round trip tickets than it is to drive.

Plus we need fans to have a good experience to want to come back. All the Yankees need to do is just be good.

Not that there's anything to be done about it, but I wouldn't call the stadium's location or the ease to get there "peripheral", especially for people just looking for some random and fun to do.

I'd be lying if I said the commute from Brooklyn didn't deter me from going to more than a few games per year, and this is by far the #1 team I support. I barely watch either the Nets or Rangers but I still grab cheap tickets when I find them just because its convenient. And after going to some away games in cities with downtown stadiums, for me it makes a huge difference in the game day experience.

The stadium is a short walk from the PATH, a slightly longer walk or a shuttle bus from Newark Penn. Right off I-280, open or garage parking for $10.

going to some away games in cities with downtown stadiums ... huge difference in the game day experience.

What cities would that be? I have been to every stadium in the East, except Orlando. Only ATL could be considered downtown, and no one lives near it. Plus, despite the hype, it is a crap venue.
In the West, I have been to Dallas, Houston, KC, LA Galaxy, Portland, & Seattle. Only Houston & Portland could be considered downtown. Again, no one lives near them.

Oops

Not that there's anything to be done about it, but the commute from Brooklyn ... deter(s) me from going
